Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said the surgery for starting wide receiver Corey Johnson to repair a torn ACL on Tuesday was a successful. Johnson got hurt on Saturday late in practice.

However, Blakeney thinks that Johnson, Troy's second-leading receiver last year with 43 catches for 440 yards, can return from the surgery this fall despite the serious nature of the injury.

"I don't think there's any question he could (come back)," Blakeney said. "There's a lot of things that help guys come back. No. 1, the best surgeons in the world don't hurt, and we've got that. Everything went well in the surgery and they did have to reconstruct some stuff."

Johnson transferred in from junior college last year. Johnson was a high school graduate in the spring of 2008, and this fall would mark his fifth fall since then. Maybe that means he used a redshirt year sometime in junior college, but they could still apply for a sixth season of eligibility. Blakeney was under the impression that he'd have to try to make it back this fall.


"You've got to be smart, you've got to understand that those rehabbers are there to help you and not hurt you, you've got to work on your diet and do everything right to get back," Blakeney said. "I think he'll do it. I think his senior year is important to him."

Felton Payton moved to the Y-receiver spot in place of Johnson, who would be starting there if healthy.
