Super Bowl Update

The final position preview, and also the shortest. Off to New Orleans on Sunday for Monday's Media Day.

THE SKINNY: Troy returns two-year starter Corey Robinson, who has a chance to shatter records before he's done at Troy and probably do that this year, health willing. Robinson's numbers weren't that different last year from his freshman year, when he had 3 top-notch senior receivers catching passes. But he had a 3-game stretch (ULM, at FIU, at Navy) where he didn't do so hot, and in a 3-9 season, sometimes that overshadows the good, which included 7 300-yard games. Last year, Robinson had an inexperienced and oft-injured offensive line as well as very inexperienced receivers. This year, it's the exact opposite, and Robinson should flourish. The main goal: drop the INT total, which has been 15 in each of the last two seasons.

THE REST: Troy has three scholarship players at QB now, after Luke Barnes had to transfer to junior college because of academics. Junior college transfer Deon Anthony and redshirt freshman Dallas Tidwell will continue their battle to be No. 2 as both performed well this spring. Anthony should be used some in Wildcat packages and Tidwell, at 6-foot-7, has a bright future. Troy signed Brandon Silvers, a strong and athletic quarterback from Gulf Shores, but he probably won't have a role this fall.


TOP MOMENT OF MY ERA (since 2005): A few stand out - Omar Haugabook leading Troy on a 2-TD drive in the final minutes to stun Middle Tennessee 21-20 in 2006; Levi Brown coming out of nowhere midway through the 2008 season to emerge from third string to perhaps Troy's best and most talented quarterback ever (in my opinion), and Corey Robinson, in just his fourth game as a college QB, taking Troy 67 yards in 28 seconds (30 yards to Jernigan, 10 yards to Bruce, 10 to Jernigan, incomplete, then 17 to Southward who was wide open on the wheel route down the right side for the TD) in a 35-28 win over Arkansas State. ASU had scored with 50 seconds left to go up 28-27.
