Jones leaving Troy basketball program

Troy men's basketball coach Don Maestri said Tuesday that guard Alan Jones is leaving the Trojan basketball program.

Jones was Troy's second-leading scorer at 10.4 points per game. He played in all 28 games, starting six, and led Troy with 63 3-pointers made.

"He just told me he wanted to get back closer to home," Maestri said.

Jones is from Wichita, Kan., and played his early high school ball in Celina, Tex.

Troy's only other returning double-digit scorer is senior forward Justin Wright, who scored 10.3 points per game last year. Rising senior point guard Will Weathers (12.2 ppg) elected not to come back for his senior season as well.

"The last few games of the year, Alan played pretty well," Maestri said. "Especially at home against Western Kentucky and on the road at FAU and FIU and a couple more games."

That leaves one scholarship spot open for the 2012-13 season, the first in the new Trojan Arena. Maestri said the coaches were hoping to sign another guard before school starts.
