Troy picked up its first athlete commitment when Dondrell Harris, from Rutherford High School in Panama City, Fla., committed to the Trojans over the weekend.
“I decided it would be better for me because it’s closer to home,” Harris said. “My mom’s side of the family is in Dothan and my other part of the family is in Panama City. I wanted to go to a place where my family can come see me and Troy was a great fit for that.”
Harris did a bit of everything for Rutherford, playing quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. At Troy, he projects as an athlete, and he’ll stick at whichever position – receiver or defensive back – that will get him on the field quickest.
Harris is 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds. Georgia Tech was recruiting him, but had not yet extended an offer. Jacksonville University and Central Florida were also in the mix.
“Troy has a great program and I’ll learn a lot from their coaches and players,” Harris said. “I’ll do what I can do to help the team. My biggest goal is to win.”
