WEVV and Buehler’s IGA announced Friday afternoon that $4,946.40 was raised in their Scan Away Hunger campaign for the Tri-State Food Bank last month.
Each time a shopper at Buehler's IGA checked out in December, they had the opportunity to donate $1.44 to the Tri State Food Bank by simply adding that small amount of money to their total grocery bill. Each cashier was able to scan a special bar code to quickly and easily add the donation to the customer's grocery bill.
“Many media outlets and similar organizations have always done a fantastic job of supplying the food bank with truckloads of canned goods and other food items," said WEVV general manager Tim Black. "WEVV decided to do something a little different this year, in that we wanted to help in making a monetary donation that the food bank will be able to stretch to as much as eight times the actual dollar value to purchase much needed food into 2013.”
The Tri-State Food Bank is able to see a return of $8.57 for each donated dollar, and the generosity of Buehler's shoppers effectively makes this a $42,000 donation to local food efforts. On average, every dollar that the Food Bank receives provides 5.2 meals. $16.15 will provide food for a family of four for a week, and $25 will provide one meal for 130 hungry people.
Each month an average of over 100,000 people received food assistant through the Food Bank's network of pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters with nearly 40,000 each month just in Vanderburgh County.
