If you want to listen to Hartford, Ky. classic hits station WXMZ-106.3 FM tomorrow, don't tune to 106.3. At some point, the station will no longer be on the air there.
You'll want to crank the dial to the left - to 99.9, which is now on the air.
WXMZ, which is owned by Starlight Broadcasting, has moved to its new position on the FM dial as approved by the FCC in November 2009. In addition, the station has doubled its power from 3,000 to 6,000 watts and now broadcasts from a brand-new 282-foot-tall southeast of Beaver Dam between U.S. 231 and the William H. Natcher Parkway and south of the Wendell Ford Western Kentucky Parkway.
It's a good move. I can tell you that WXMZ can now reach Owensboro relatively clearly even on a mediocre radio; before, interference from WDKS (106.1 Kiss-FM) and Thy Word Network's Owensboro translator on 106.5 pretty effectively crowded it out.
And it doesn't just reach Owensboro; it goes farther than that. I'm told by the station's engineer, Dave Hertel, that he was able to listen all the way as far as the Green River bridge on the Audubon Parkway before he turned it off. That certainly wouldn't have been possible before.
Give it a try for yourself sometime.
EDITOR'S NOTE: WXMZ is one of four stations owned by Starlight Broadcasting. The company also owns WNES-1050 AM and WQXQ-101.9 FM in Central City, Ky., which is currently operated by Virtual Formats LLC as Q102; and WKYA-105.5 FM in Greenville, Ky.
