It looks like Dish Network's customers will lose BTN around midnight tonight.
The satellite provider and the Big Ten Conference's cable TV network still haven't reached a new retransmission consent agreement, and if they don't do so before the flip of the calendar from August to September late tonight, count on BTN to pull the plug.
“It doesn’t look good,” Elizabeth Conlisk, VP of communications and university relations for BTN, told the Lansing State Journal. “We’re still significantly far apart. Dish continues to seek preferential treatment, looking for terms that are significantly below market value for BTN.”
For its part, a Dish Network representative would say only that negotiations are continuing.
The timing of this dispute couldn't be worse. College football starts this weekend, and of course the Big Ten is home to a number of powerhouse teams. I anticipate a number of grouchy viewers if the channel goes away.
