Sounders defeat Caledonia AIA 3-1; Close in on a second straight Champions League Quarterfinal birth

By Money Mike

The Seattle Sounders have inched closer to a second straight CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal birth. Last night, the Sounders defeated Caledonia AIA 3-1 and are only one win away from clinching a place in the Quarterfinal stage of the Champions League. The Sounders next Champions League match won't be until September 19th when they travel to Honduras to take on C.D. Marathon. Both these teams have faced eachother twice in the group stage of the 2010-11 Champions League. The first meeting was in Honduras with Marathon coming out on top 2-1. The second match was here in Seattle with the Sounders returning the favor and winning 2-0.

In the 10th minute of the match, the Sounders should've been a goal up. Mario Martinez was making his first competitive start for the Sounders and he whipped in a great cross to the far post for a free header from Sammy Ochoa, but his header was saved by Glenroy Samuel as it bounced off his face.

In the 25th minute, Caledonia failed to clear the danger and they gave the ball away in their own area as Ozzie Alonso stepped in and from about 19 yards away fired his shot low and hard with his left foot, but it didn't trouble the goalkeeper and it was an easy save for Samuel.

In the 36th minute, Michael Gspurning found himself under a bit of pressure. Kareem Joseph whipped in a high lofted ball to the far post which started to dip as it came down, and Gspurning had to punch the ball away because there was a player ready to head the ball into the goal or at least put home the rebound if he had any chance.

A few minutes later, Alex Caskey took the corner kick for the Sounders. Glenroy Samuel came out and tried to punch the ball away and the ball bounced to Marc Burch at the far post. Burch looked to take advantage of the goalkeeping mistake but his shot was blocked as Caledonia had four guys on the line to clear the ball away.

In the 45th minute, the Sounders found the breakthrough. Zach Scott made a run forward from his right back position and worked a give and go with Sammy Ochoa, although it was nearly broken up after Ochoa nearly had trouble controlling the ball. Scott got the return as squared the ball across to the near post for Alex Caskey to tap it in for his third goal in all competitions this season and the Sounders took the lead in Trinidad 1-0.

About five minutes into the second half, Caledonia should've pulled level. There was nice through ball played into the area. I don't know who played that ball, I think it might have been Stephan David. Anyway, there was a ball played through and Cornelius Stewart got onto it, but somehow he put it wide.

In the 60th minute, the Sounders doubled their lead and looked to be walking away with all three points. Fredy Montero picked up the ball from Ozzie Alonso and made a nice cut to get past Radanfah Abu Bakr before laying the ball off to Sammy Ochoa. Ochoa received the ball, settled and from the top of the penalty area ripped his shot into the top left hand corner to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

That was until the 67th minute when Caledonia were awarded a penalty. There was a chip into the penalty area that was intended for Jamaal Gay and Zach Scott appeared to have pulled him down in the area. Referee Javier Santos pointed to the spot immediately, but I didn't think there was enough for that to be a penalty. I thought Gay went down rather easily there. Much like in MLS, CCL officiating has been controversial to say the least. And just like the first Champions League match, Kareem Joseph stepped up to the spot and took the honors for Caledonia AIA and he put his kick inside the left post to cut the Sounders lead in half.

The Sounders responded quickly however and in the 69th minute, they would add a third goal. Alex Caskey made a nice move to get away from Aubrey David and squared the ball across toward the near and Fredy Montero was right there once again to add to his goalscoring tally in all competitions this season and that was the decisive goal for the Sounders as they defeated Caledonia 3-1.

The Sounders turn their attention back to MLS play on Sunday as they head to Frisco to take on FC Dallas.  The Sounders have come away victorious in their last two visits and will look to make it three in a row at FC Dallas Stadium as they chase the San Jose Earthquakes for the Supporters Shield.  Kickoff time is 4pm and will be televised on KONG-TV.

Robinson, Trojans have unfinished business

Since the game is so early in the morning, I figured I'd post my game preview story in the Saturday Dothan Eagle online now. Besides, who will be interested this at 4 p.m. tomorrow? It's on dothaneagle.com HERE.

BY DREW CHAMPLIN | dchamplin@dothaneagle.com

BIRMINGHAM – Troy quarterback Corey Robinson doesn’t have fond memories of Legion Field, but it is the place where the junior put up some career-best numbers.
Robinson, who will lead the Trojans into Saturday’s 11 a.m. game against UAB, threw for a career-best 404 yards two years ago in just his third college game, but it was overshadowed by UAB’s come-from-behind 34-33 win.

Now, Robinson and the Trojans are ready to avenge not just that, but last year’s 3-9 season. The Trojans  wore t-shirts that read “Unfinished Business” on the bus ride to Birmingham.

Coaches say that Robinson, who won Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors in 2010, is light years better than he was even last year. At Troy’s media day on Aug. 11., quarterbacks coach Sean Reagan said Robinson’s fundamentals were “night and day” better than they were at this time last year.

Robinson said he spent the summer watching hours and hours of film. He studied New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, one of the NFL’s best and Robinson’s favorite quarterback, on ways to improve.

“I’m just trying to learn from the best,” Robinson said. “I watched a couple of things he did to help himself get better. My pocket presence, I feel like, has improved night and day and that’s what Coach Reagan was talking about. My fundamentals, my arm angle, small stuff like that – little stuff that makes a good quarterback be a better one.”

Robinson needs just 551 yards to set the school’s career passing yards record, which is currently held by Sim Byrd.

“I hope he gets (the record) soon,” Troy offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield said. “Right now I think he’s more concerned with just executing the offense, managing the game and I think if he does that, it’ll come.”
Robinson said the Trojans have mostly been watching film of their game last year at Arkansas, a 38-28 loss.

That’s because first-year UAB head coach Garrick McGee came from Arkansas, where he served as offensive coordinator. UAB defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson also coached on the Arkansas staff last season.

As far as records go, Robinson didn’t want to talk much about them.

“I’ve got to get there first,” he said. “A lot of things can happen between now and then. We’ve just got to get there. That’s all I want to say about that.”

McGee said earlier this week that the UAB defensive staff must figure out a way to slow Robinson down and not give him much time to throw the ball.

“We cannot allow him to just sit back and pitch off of a mound and not apply pressure to him, and not give him different looks,” McGee said. “Our defensive tackles have to push the pocket in the middle to push him off of his set point.”

Detroit Business Consulting Golfs in Phoenix

The President of Detroit Business Consulting Michael Rosenberg is spending the weekend in Phoenix, AZ where he is enjoying some "work hard, play hard" activities.  He met up with other consultants from around the country for a fantasy football draft and some networking time.  Although the draft is tomorrow, the group met today for a game of golf, which will give them time to talk about the offices and future expansion.

It's safe to say that Michael deserved some time on the golf course in beautiful Phoenix.  His company recently expanded to its 21st location and ranked second in the nation in sales for his company's telecom client. With the European expansion beginning at the end of this year, Detroit Business Consulting has some big goals to hit for the remainder of 2012!

Make your season prediction

Stolen off Kyle Wilborn's twitter, this is Troy's team riding the bus to UAB
Would like to hear everyone's season predictions on the blog comments.

So, make them. Here are mine

Leading passer: Corey Robinson
Leading rusher: Shawn Southward
Leading receiver: Chip Reeves
Leading pancake blocks: Zach Johnson
Leading tackles: Brannon Bryan
Leading sacks: Tyler Roberts
Leading interceptions: Zach Miller
Final regular season record: 7-5

7-5 is the record that pops into my head. I can't really look at the schedule and peg certain games as automatic Ws or Ls, but I think based on the Trojans normally playing well at home, probably being on a bounce back year yet still probably having a game where they stumble and lose as a favorite.

Dish and BTN still don't have a deal

Big Ten's TV network will likely be removed from satellite lineup at midnight unless agreement is reached

It looks like Dish Network's customers will lose BTN around midnight tonight.

The satellite provider and the Big Ten Conference's cable TV network still haven't reached a new retransmission consent agreement, and if they don't do so before the flip of the calendar from August to September late tonight, count on BTN to pull the plug.

“It doesn’t look good,” Elizabeth Conlisk, VP of communications and university relations for BTN, told the Lansing State Journal. “We’re still significantly far apart. Dish continues to seek preferential treatment, looking for terms that are significantly below market value for BTN.”

For its part, a Dish Network representative would say only that negotiations are continuing.

The timing of this dispute couldn't be worse.  College football starts this weekend, and of course the Big Ten is home to a number of powerhouse teams.  I anticipate a number of grouchy viewers if the channel goes away.

OOPS: Equipment snafu puts stop to WTVW's football doubleheader

Titans game couldn't be taped for delayed broadcast Thursday night

Between them, WEHT Local and Local 7 WTVW were supposed to air three NFL preseason games as a cap to the stations' exhibition game coverage last night.  Two of those games actually aired - the Rams/Ravens game on WEHT and the Colts/Bengals game on WTVW.

The third - the tape-delayed Titans/Saints game - couldn't be shown.

I'm told that an equipment problem caused the recording of that game to stop about halfway through, and instead of putting an incomplete broadcast on air, the station reverted to other programming.

It's disappointing that equipment issues are still happening on Marywood Drive, but hopefully they've discovered the source of this particular problem and fixed it.

Next MLB television deals could "alter the media landscape," reports L.A. Times' Flint

Fox and Turner contracts with MLB end after '13 season; baseball wants new deal in place before the end of this season

Major League Baseball is a huge, huge property for Fox and Turner Broadcasting.  And it's entirely possible that they could remain in command of the game when new deals are put in place with MLB.

Or, as the L.A. Times' Joe Flint reports, what happens when those deals are done could "radically alter the media landscape."

It's believed that Turner's TBS wants to expand its territory.  But to do that, they'd have to partner with a broadcast network (CBS is said to have been approached) for the World Series and possibly the All-Star Game, as MLB is adamant that those remain on broadcast TV.

And then there's NBC, which could use something besides football to shore up its miserable ratings (the network's mediocre slate of new fall shows won't help; let's be honest about that).  The issue there would be football, which NBC airs on Sunday nights.  That's sure to be a sticking point.

Fox seems likely to hang on to what it has now and Flint speculates that the network could spin some of its regular-season games to its Fuel cable network, which could be rebranded and recast as a broad-based sports network to rival ESPN.

One thing's for sure:  MLB wants a new deal in place before this year's champion is crowned.  That means we'll see who's serious and who's just looking soon enough.

Huskies takes on Aztecs for the first time since 1997

By Kshell

The Washington Huskies(7-6,5-4 last year, 4th in Pac-12 last year) kick off the fourth season under Steve Sarkisian against the San Diego State Aztecs(8-5, 4-3, 4th in Mountain West last year) at home. This year home for the Huskies will be at Century Link Field home of the Seattle Seahawks. Last season the Huskies won their first season opener since 2007 when they narrowly defeated D-1AA Eastern Washington Eagles 30-27. Sarkisian is 1-2 in season openers at Washington but has won his last two home openers. There will be plenty to be excited about in this game. The Aztecs like the Huskies are a bowl team who lost some key pieces but also return some key pieces. The Huskies will also have some anticipated debuts from some super freshman as these teams square off for the first time since 1997.

In the previous meeting between these two teams back in 1997 the #3 ranked Washington Huskies were coming off a big win at #19 BYU Cougars and were set to take on eventual national champion Nebraska Cornhuskers the following week. This was their home opener against San Diego State which they won 36-3 led by Brock Huard who was 16-26 passing for 313 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. While Rashaan Shehee ran for 72 yards on 16 carries and Maurice Shaw ran for 79 yards on 14 carries. Huard started the game off with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Jerome Pathon in the first first quarter as the Huskies led 7-0. In the second quarter after a  Huskies field goal it was Huard again who connected with Fred Coleman for a nine yard touchdown as the Huskies led 17-3 at halftime.

In the second half the Huskies kept the scoring up as Huard hit Pathon on a slant which he took for a touchdown 53 yards. Then in the fourth quarter Huard hit backup tight end Reggie Davis for a 12 yard touchdown as the Huskies won 36-3. Pathon finished with eight receptions for 182 yards with two touchdowns while Coleman had three for 70 yards with a touchdown. The Huskies held the Aztecs to negative seven yards rushing on that day something these Huskies are hoping they can duplicate.

The Aztecs return six starters on offense and five on defense. They lost quarterback Ryan Lindley who threw for 3,153 yards last year with 23 touchdowns and 8 int's. They also lost running back Ronnie Hillman who ran for 1,711 yards with 19 touchdowns. They do return both starting wide receivers. They return junior wide receiver Colin Lockett who had 56 receptions last season for 970 yards(16.8 YPC) with eight touchdowns. They also return Dylan Denso who caught 49 passes for 634 yards(12.9 YPC) with three touchdowns.

The Aztecs tight end Gavin Escobar who had 51 receptions for 780 yards(15.3 YPC) with seven touchdowns. The running game will see Adam Muema start who played in six games last year. Muema in those six games rushed for 253 yards(6.0 YPC) with three touchdowns. Backing him up is Walter Kazee who in nine games ran for 339 yards(4.6 YPC) with four touchdowns. The Aztecs have ready guys to replace Hillman and they feel like they have a ready guy to replace Lindley as he is a familiar face.

The starting quarterback will be former Oregon State Beavers quarterback Ryan Katz. Katz as a sophomore in 2010 had a solid first year as a starter. Katz threw for 2,401 yards(6.8 YPA) while completing 213 of 355 passes(60.0%) for 18 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. Katz struggled in the famous loss to Sacramento State and after hardly playing against Wisconsin the following week his Oregon State career was over.

Katz has faced the Washington Huskies before playing in a game back in 2010 which the Huskies won 35-34 in double overtime led by Jake Locker throwing five touchdown passes. In that game Katz struggled he was 17-31(54.8%) passing for 206 yards(6.6 YPA) with one touchdown but three costly interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown in that game. The Huskies are a much different team than two years as only Desmond Trufant and Talia Crichton started that game who will start this Saturday. That game was also at Husky Stadium while this game will be played at Century Link. The Aztecs are a bowl team with some key offensive pieces back plus a Pac-12 caliber quarterback facing a defense who is starting a former walk-on at corner. The Aztecs offense will look to put up some points but will it be enough against this potent Huskies attack led by Keith Price?

The Huskies team will go where Keith Price takes them. Price is a quarterback very few teams can stop especially a mountain west type team. Last year Price completed 242-362(66.9%) of his passes for 3,063 yards(8.5 YPA) with 33 touchdowns(school record) to only 11 interceptions while rushing for three touchdowns. He was at his best in the 67-56 Alamo Bowl loss to Baylor. Going up against heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III it was Price who stood out that day despite the loss. Price was 23-37(62.2%) passing for 438 yards(11.8 YPA) with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for 39 yards with three touchdowns. Price is hoping to build on that game and that season this year.

Price may have lost some weapons but he does return some key guys as well. His main target will be Kasen Williams who caught 36 passes for 427 yards(11.9 YPC) with six touchdowns which put him in a three-way tie for second place. He was also only a true freshman last season as he was a five star recruit coming out of high school. Another target Price will have is Austin Seferian-Jenkins who likeWillliams didn't disappoint as he was all pac-12 honorable mention for tight end. Seferian-Jenkins this past season caught 41 passes for 544 yards(13.3 YPC) with six touchdowns. He was also a five-star recruit true freshman last season. Price will also have two guys making their first career starts in their first career games as Huskies. The Huskies will also be having the debut of another heralded five-star recruit in Shaq Thompson.

Shaq Thompson will be making his highly anticipated debut for the Huskies. He is a five-star #1 safety in the nation and #3 player overall in the nation coming out of Sacramento California. He'll also play some offense as he ran for 1,134 yards with 15 touchdowns on only 120 carries as a senior. As a junior he ran for 1,882 yards with 25 touchdowns on 164 carries. He'll be a much added addition to the defense as well as the offense.

The Huskies are also starting four-star wide receiver Jaydon Mickens. Mickens is the 45th ranked receiver in the nation on scout and 11th ranked receiver in the nation on rivals. During his senior year Mickens was an all around athlete as he caught 32 passes for 558 yards(17.4 YPC) with seven touchdowns, he also ran the ball 82 times for 378 yards(4.61 YPC) with 13 touchdowns. He even attempted 32 passes on the year for 238 yards passing. The other starter is true freshman Kendyl Taylor who is a three-star recruit out of Arizona. During his senior year he caught 87 passes for 1,132 yards with 16 touchdowns. He also ran for 558 yards on 68 carries as he led his team to the state championship game where they lost snapping a 53 game winning streak. This Huskies recruiting class was pretty good as they were ranked for the third straight year but these three guys will be making their debuts in the starting role this Saturday.

The big question mark on offense this Saturday could be who replaces Chris Polk? Well for now not even Steve Sarkisian knows he has listed Jesse Callier and Bishop Sankey as co-starters. Callier as a freshman had 413 yards rushing (5.4 YPC) with 18 catches with 98 yards (5.4 YPC).  As a sophomore Callier battled injuries and thus his production fell off. Callier had just 260 yards rushing (5.5 YPC) with a touchdown. He had seven receptions for 65 yards and had 576 kickoff return yards.

While Sankey is a four star running back and 17th rated back in the 2011 class.  In his first season with the Huskies Sankey ran for 187 yards (6.7 YPC) with a touchdown. He also added six receptions and 134 yards in kickoff yards. With the Aztecs running a 3-3-5 nickel defense which is set up to stop the pass look for the Huskies to try and establish the run game. Many of their big passing plays came on play action passes which can only work if the run game is going. In short spurts both Callier and Sankey proved they can get the job done. Now there is no more Chris Polk to bail them out we'll see how these two can handle the work load. Those questions will be answered tomorrow in the first game in the post Chris Polk era. I think the Huskies are in good shape with these two plus others like Kevin Smith, Mickens and Thompson who will add to the running game.

The Washington Huskies look to win their second straight season opening game for the first time since the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Huskies also look to win their third straight home opener since winning four straight from 2000-03. The Huskies are favored by 14.5 points and should win this game without needing some sort of miracle like last season. I think Sarkisian has learned his lesson from the Eastern Washington game as he dialed back the offensive playbook quite a bit which almost cost him. I think the Huskies will treat this game like any other game so look for them to pull out all the stops. The Huskies are 1-1 all-time at Century Link Field will take the field against a hungry Aztecs team as both teams are coming off bowl seasons. If the Huskies hope to continue to grow as a program they will take care of business as they prepare for a tough match up the following week at LSU. For now the Huskies hope to start the season off 1-0 for the second straight year and give their fans a victory to open the season for a third straight year.

Artist Joe Black's Made In China was created using using more than 5,500 toy soldiers. The portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by well-known photojournalist Robert Capa and appeared on the May, 1938 cover of LIFE magazine. The colored, molded plastic toy soldiers used in the project were manufactured in China, hence the title “Made in China”.

Troy aims to improve run game

Khary Franklin and the Trojans hope to run the ball better this year.

This story is in the Friday print edition of the Dothan Eagle and on dothaneagle.com HERE.

BY DREW CHAMPLIN | dchamplin@dothaneagle.com

TROY – One of Troy’s hidden treasures throughout its run of five straight Sun Belt Conference championships was its ability to run the ball.

Last year, that aspect went way out the window, along with its season. Troy ranked 117 th nationally, rushing for just 88.7 yards per game. It was a steep decline from the previous four seasons, when the Trojans averaged 164 yards per game.

“Even though we were thought of as a spread pass team, we won a lot of the run game battles,” said John Schlarman, Troy’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator. “As a line, we were disappointed in that and as coaches, we were disappointed in that. In this offseason, we’ve gone back to establishing that mentality that, even in the years where we won those championships, if you look at the statistics, we won the run game battle.”

Schlarman pointed to a few things that needed to improve by the offensive line for the run game to get back to where it was, but the main aspect was consistency. It didn’t help last year that Troy ended up losing three players during the season to injuries (Jacob Creech, Kyle Wilborn, Jimmie Arnold) and the only two positions where players started all 12 games were at left tackle (James Brown) and center (Zach Swindall).
Troy played two freshmen for most of the season on the right side in Zach Johnson and Terrence Jones.

While there were growing pains last year, the two are now grizzled veterans with a bright future.

“We have to be more consistent on assignments and more consistent on technique,” Schlarman said. “We absolutely placed a lot of emphasis on that for this season and hopefully it shows. It’s not that we have to come up with some new formula, but we have to be more consistent and we weren’t last year. In years past, we were, and that’s the big difference.”

Troy’s offensive line will start three seniors – Jarred Fleming, Cody Woodiel and Kyle Wilborn, from left tackle to center, and Johnson and Jones. Fleming started games last year at right tackle and left guard and Woodiel played sparingly last year as a tight end, beefing up this season.

Two top backups are also upperclassmen in junior Jimmie Arnold (one start last year) and senior Andrew Phillips. Sophomore Chris Hawkins and redshirt freshman Dalton Bennett also round out the rotation.

Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield said that the Trojans are “going to improve on” the run game. He added that Troy has been able to pound the ball in the fourth quarter in the past more often because the Trojans were winning. Last year, Troy held a lead in part of the fourth quarter in only two if its nine losses.

“When you get down and turn the ball over, you have to get away from (the run game) that a lot sooner than you want to and that was the case last year,” Edenfield said. “You want to be able to dictate when you run and throw the ball.”

Troy head coach Larry Blakeney also agreed that the Trojans should be better in the run game. Troy returns seniors Shawn Southward and D.J. Taylor, though Taylor is out for Saturday’s 11 a.m. season opener at UAB, and several young players are vying for carries.

The addition of junior college transfer quarterback Deon Anthony also gives Troy a threat. Corey Robinson is the undisputed starter, but Anthony could see somewhere around 10 snaps a game in the ‘Wildcat’ formation.

“He’s a Wildcat guy that will throw and that gives him a chance to come in there in Wildcat situations and have them deciding if they’re going to load the box and stop him or cover the receivers and give them a chance to stop him,” Blakeney said.

A grueling offseason program helped the offensive linemen add strength. If they can use that and stay consistent with technique and assignments, the Trojans should be much better offensively this season.

“We’ve gotten a few schemes where we’ll be a little more hard-headed,” Blakeney said. “It won’t always be pretty, but we’ve got some things that will help us in the run game. We’ve got to get the ball to the right people in the right places.”

WXMZ moves from 106.3 to 99.9 FM

Starlight-owned station increases power from 3,000 to 6,000 watts with move down the dial

If you want to listen to Hartford, Ky. classic hits station WXMZ-106.3 FM tomorrow, don't tune to 106.3.  At some point, the station will no longer be on the air there.

You'll want to crank the dial to the left - to 99.9, which is now on the air.

WXMZ, which is owned by Starlight Broadcasting, has moved to its new position on the FM dial as approved by the FCC in November 2009.  In addition, the station has doubled its power from 3,000 to 6,000 watts and now broadcasts from a brand-new 282-foot-tall southeast of Beaver Dam between U.S. 231 and the William H. Natcher Parkway and south of the Wendell Ford Western Kentucky Parkway.

It's a good move. I can tell you that WXMZ can now reach Owensboro relatively clearly even on a mediocre radio; before, interference from WDKS (106.1 Kiss-FM) and Thy Word Network's Owensboro translator on 106.5 pretty effectively crowded it out.

And it doesn't just reach Owensboro; it goes farther than that.  I'm told by the station's engineer, Dave Hertel, that he was able to listen all the way as far as the Green River bridge on the Audubon Parkway before he turned it off.  That certainly wouldn't have been possible before.

Give it a try for yourself sometime.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  WXMZ is one of four stations owned by Starlight Broadcasting.  The company also owns WNES-1050 AM and WQXQ-101.9 FM in Central City, Ky., which is currently operated by Virtual Formats LLC as Q102; and WKYA-105.5 FM in Greenville, Ky.

MSNBC's coverage of RNC is a marriage-made-in-heaven of Political Correctness & Ethnic Politics. If Mainstream Media's PC Police there deem it racist to say "Chicago," what does it mean NOW if you say "Chicago deep-dish"? Or, how many times can MSNBC jump-the-shark?

Speakmymind02 video:  Paranoid political correctness runs the roost when head rooster Chris Matthews is around, clucking his wild theories that for years have become increasingly creepy and offensive.
Chris Matthews: “They keep saying Chicago, by the way, you noticed?”
John Heilemann: “Well, there’s a lot of black people in Chicago”

These sort of cringe-inspiring PC moments are painful even
