Thy Word Network founder Donald Chagle dies at 81

Donald Chagle, 1931-2012
Chagle founded WBGW after retirement; network has grown to four stations covering the Tri-State

Donald Chagle, who, with his late wife Shirley, founded Tri-State religious radio network Thy Word Network more than two decades ago, has died.

He was 81.

Mr. Chagle retired 26 years ago after 35 years with Bartlett Auto Parts, and thereafter obtained real estate and auction licenses, but his best-known retirement project now covers parts of three states.  Thy Word Network - then just WBGW-101.5 FM - went on the air in 1990 from the basement of the Chagles' home.

As time went by, they added more stations, and now there are four:  The original, WBGW; a translator of WBGW on 106.5 FM in Owensboro; WBHW-88.7 FM in Loogootee, Ind.; and WBJW-91.7 FM in Albion, Ill.

His obituary reads, "This radio station was the center of his life these past 22 years."  And indeed it stands as a legacy.

Mr. Chagle was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, in September 2011.  He is survived by one son and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Chagle will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Christian Fellowship Church, 4100 Millersburg Rd. in Evansville with Rev. Spencer Downs officiating. Entombment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave. in Evansville. Friends may also visit from 9 a.m. until service time at church on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Thy Word Network, P.O. Box 4164, Evansville, Ind. 47724.
