Ted Bassett: A Kentucky Gentleman gives KET viewers an insider's look at a distinguished Kentuckian

James E. "Ted" Bassett III
Distinguished Kentuckian James Edward “Ted” Bassett III is best known for his stewardship of the Keeneland Association and the Thoroughbred industry. However, his work with the equine world is only part of his life story. Yale graduate, U.S. Marine, newsprint salesman, tobacco farmer, and director of the Kentucky State Police are just a few of the early chapters in his storied career.

Ted Bassett: A Kentucky Gentleman, which examines Bassett's life and career, airs tonight at 8 p.m. CT (9 ET) on KET and Thursday night at 9 p.m. CT (10 ET) on KET2.

All of these experiences helped prepare Bassett for his most important challenge – taking over the reins at Keeneland in 1970, where he played a critical role in its ascendency as a premier Thoroughbred track and auction house. For the next 40 years, Bassett’s work in the Thoroughbred world, especially in the development of the Breeders’ Cup, would have a major impact on the industry and help form his reputation as the international ambassador for racing.

Ted Bassett: A Kentucky Gentleman takes an insiders’ look at the life and background of this unique Kentuckian. The film uses archival footage and photographs, many from Bassett’s personal scrapbooks and archives. Interviews with industry notables, trainers, and others complement Bassett’s own stories and reflections. Throughout it all, this biography looks at how Ted Bassett’s life experiences instilled in him a strong sense of service and tradition and the impact he has had on the community, the state, and the world.
