WSIU-TV 8 and WUSI-TV 16, the public television stations of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, welcome the new PBS KIDS series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood to their children’s programming schedule on weekdays at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Saturdays at 5:30 a.m., and Sundays at 8 a.m. The series debuted on PBS stations around the country early this week.
Inspired by the work of Fred Rogers, creator and host of the beloved children’s television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood stars four-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program’s Daniel Striped Tiger, who gives young viewers a kid’s-eye view of his life and helps them to learn the practical skills they need to grow and learn.
“No one knew better than Fred Rogers how to connect with children,” said Bill Isler, president of The Fred Rogers Company. “And, like Fred, Daniel Tiger will visit preschoolers every day. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (will) appeal to today’s children and families…and (is) well-poised to become a much-loved classic for years to come.”
Each episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood consists of two engaging stories that center on a common early learning theme, such as dealing with disappointment and learning self-control, patience, persistence, and resilience.
A companion website at http://pbskids.org/daniel offers online games and activities, along with resources for parents, caregivers, and teachers. PBS KIDS also has launched “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Play at Home With Daniel,” a new app designed for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and now available online at http://to.pbs.org/playwithdaniel.
