WSIU, Carbondale Public Library to present Community Cinema beginning Sept. 29

WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale (Ill.) Public Library have partnered for a second season of Community Cinema, a series of free film screenings from the PBS series Independent Lens to be held at the library on the last Saturday of every month at 2:30 p.m. Screenings begin Sept. 29 and will be held monthly, with the exception of December, through June 2013.

The new season kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. with Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Discussion facilitators for the September film are Jenn Freitag, Prevention Educator for Rape Crisis Services, Women's Center-Carbondale, and Shannon Lindsay Toth, a doctoral student in Women's Studies at SIU Carbondale. Refreshments will be provided.

A landmark series based on the book by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide follows celebrity activists as they travel through six countries to meet inspiring individuals confronting oppression and developing meaningful solutions for women and girls through health care, education, and economic empowerment. The remaining schedule is as follows: As Goes Janesville (Oct. 27), Solar Mamas (Nov. 24), Soul Food Junkies (Jan. 26), The Powerbroker (Feb. 23), Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines (Mar. 30), The Island President (Apr. 27), The Revolutionary Optimists (May 25), and Love Free or Die (June 29).  Each screening will feature a facilitator and guest speakers who will participate in a discussion with the audience about the topics raised in the films.

Community Cinema is a groundbreaking civic engagement initiative from the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and is designed to brings to light unforgettable stories about unique individuals, underrepresented communities, or pivotal moments in history. Carbondale is among over 100 cities nationally who are currently participating in the project, which brings together leading organizations, community members, and public television stations to discuss and get involved in key social issues of our time.
