Book Report: One Hundred Years of Solitude

(Highly Recommended!)

Title: One Hundred Years of Solitude

Author: Gabriel García Márquez

Who Recommended this Book?: A cute boy. Always follow the advice of Attractives.

Type of Book (fantasy, humor, science fiction, mystery, biography, non-fiction): All of the above?

Main Character:
A bunch of people. It follows the Buendia Family in the town of Marcando for several generations. If they made this into a terrible movie they would rename it, "Meet The Buendías!"

Your favorite character:
TIE. Ursula, the matriarch and Remedios The Beauty.

Plot:
Oh JEEZ. Where to begin? Let's see. It's about the Buendía Family who live for generations in the town of Marcondo which was founded by patriarch José Arcadio Buendía. The town is visited by unusual and extraordinary events that involve members of the Buendía family and their friends. Lots of the Buendías spend lots of time in solitude. Hence the title.

What did you think of the book?
It was fantastic! Very worthy of the Nobel Prize it got and the Oprah's Book Club attention it received.

What did you like about the book?
The imagery. The language. The whole book was beautiful and unexpected and sad. I loved it. I will definitely read it again, because I only scratched the surface of what was going on upon the first reading.

What didn’t you like about the book?
Sometimes people died abruptly and it was sad. Then other times you thought people were dead and they'd just have been sitting in a room for several years and they'd pop up again and it was jarring. Sometime death didn't stop some people from hanging around.

Was the story confusing or hard to believe?
Well, there were a few dozen people names Aureliano. That got to be a bit much.

Was the story predictable (could you guess what was going to happen?)
Definitely no.

The ending was:
CRAZY! And I personally thought it was very haunting. But I gotta stay spoiler free here.

Would you recommend this book?:
Most definitely! But I know a lot of people who started it and never got through it. It's not for everyone. Also, it's currently not available on kindle, so visit your local library or head out to Barnes & Noble for an old-fashioned book. I got it from the library, but I think I will purchase a copy for myself. It really deserves repeat readings. Go give it a shot!
