Super Bowl Update

Yesterday I spoke with Pensacola JC point guard Antione "Fresh" Myers, who signed with Troy along with teammate Jeff Mullahey (pronounced Muh-LAY-hee). Today, I spoke with Mullahey on picking Troy.

"They started really recruiting me kind of late," Mullahey said. "I went up there and took a visit and liked everything about it. My best friend, Justin (Wright), plays there and that played a big reason for it."

Mullahey, 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, is a 2-guard and he'll compete for a spot on the wing.

"I shoot a lot of threes," Mullahey said. "They want to play a lot faster and run up and down and score. They're looking for me to be a consistent shooter. I'm more athletic than people perceive me. I really focus on playing good defense and that's been my niche in high school and at junior college. I'm a good team defender and I try to outsmart people. I feel like I'm unselfish as well. I just want to win."

Mullahey and Wright became best friends playing basketball at Pace (Fla.) High School. When the two were seniors, Pace set a school record with 25 wins and won its first-ever playoff game.

"We had probably four college players, and as seniors it started with us," Mullahey said. "Pace wasn't known for basketball. It was more of a baseball school, but one of the things I'm most proud of is what we accomplished as a high school tandem."

Now, Mullahey and Wright are hoping to turn around Troy's fortunes. The Trojans won the Sun Belt regular season in 2010, but have had two straight losing seasons.

"That's the plan," Mullahey said. "That's what we're shooting for. If everybody can buy in and we can get some good chemistry going, I think we can get it done."

Mullahey, who redshirted his first year at PJC, was in the pre-engineering program at PJC, but said he'd likely major in Mathematics at Troy. Mullahey was a first-team All-Panhandle Conference selection as a sophomore.
