(Look, ma! No shades! Davis is ready to feel those leg muscles burn as he heads into the final 200m)
Last night, Shani Davis repeated his gold medal win in the 1,000 meters speedskating event. In 2006, Davis became the first African-American to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games.
Chad Hedrick from the US was something of a surprise bronze medalist, Hedrick is an Olympic veteran but this is not his strongest distance. Good on him!!
For Davis, winning helped ease some of the controversy surrounding his decision to bail midway through the 500m event a couple days earlier. He said he wanted to focus his energy on this race where he felt he had the best chance to win. I don't know... it's still a little wonky to me, but I'm glad at least he has something great to show for it.
Davis needed an amazing final 200m to beat Mo Tae-bum, (who btw has my favorite name of this year's Olympics) who won the 500m and got the silver.
Speed skating has been awesome this Olympics and I look forward to more races in the coming week!
