Illinois-based Barrington Broadcasting reportedly for sale

Nexstar, Sinclair said to be finalists for company's 24 stations in 15 markets

Schaumburg, Ill.-based Barrington Broadcasting is being shopped, TVNewsCheck reports this morning, and two broadcast companies with ties to our region are said to be the finalists to pick up the firm's 24 stations.

Nexstar Broadcasting, which owns and/or operates WEHT Local and WTVW in Evansville and WTWO and WAWV in Terre Haute, and Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns KBSI and operates WDKA in the Paducah market, along with KDNL-ABC30 in St. Louis and three stations in Nashville, have been busily buying up stations this year, and are said to have submitted bids for Barrington.

Barrington, founded in 2003 by the Pilot Group, operates in 15 markets, mostly in mid-sized and smaller markets (not unlike Nexstar and Sinclair).  Its stations are in places like Flint, Mich.; Peoria, Ill.; Toledo, Ohio; and other cities.  (A full list can be found here.)

Stay tuned ... this should be interesting.
