16 MLS teams kicked off their U.S. Open Cup campaign in the third round this week. However, half of the pack got knocked out. The other half, including the Seattle Sounders, advanced to the fourth round. The Seattle Sounders advanced after a 5-1 beatdown over the Atlanta Silverbacks last night in front 3,703 fans at Starfire. The Sounders will face Cal FC next Tuesday at Starfire after they upset the Portland Timbers at their home ground with a 1-0 win in extra time. Had the Timbers won that match as everyone would've expected, Seattle would've traveled down to Portland and faced the Timbers in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup. That also would've been the third time in the last four years that Portland hosted an Open Cup match against Seattle.
The Sounders tested the Atlanta Silverbacks backline straight from the opening kickoff. Cordell Cato won that battle for the ball with Jose Burciaga, Jr. and poked the ball for Sammy Ochoa. Ochoa turned and had a go from about 25 yards out, but no problem for goalkeeper Joe Nasco to make the save.
In the 19th minute, the Sounders had a great opportunity to go ahead. Cordell Cato took on former UW Husky Raphael Cox who had a torrid time in this match. Cato squared the ball across low for Eddie Johnson from about 12 yards away, but Johnson skied it over top of the bar. I'm not sure how much of a chance Johnson had in putting that one away because he had to reach out for that ball with his left foot. It almost looked like he stumbled a little bit while trying to put that away, but a big chance there for Eddie Johnson who has struggled these last couple of weeks.
In the 21st minute, Danilo Turcois backheeled the ball to Raphael Cox for a first timed shot that sailed over the bar. Turcois, who represented Honduras at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, looked like he was used as a playmaker in this match for the Atlanta Silverbacks.
In the 36th minute, this could easily have been a straight red card had the referee or the linesman spotted this one. Joe Nasco collided with teammate Jose Burciaga, Jr. which gave Ozzie Alonso a try from the half way line. Nasco did get back and punch it wide, but it looked like he was outside the penalty area. If a goalkeeper handles the ball outside the box, that's an automatic red card. I think he was lucky that the referee didn't call anything.
In the 43rd minute, Alex Caskey tried his luck from 19 yards out and forced another save from Joe Nasco. The Sounders have tested Nasco from all cylindars the entire match and made things tough for him.
Shortly after, the Sounders struck first. Eddie Johnson headed the ball across to Jeff Parke who then chested the ball down at the top of the area and the man standing there was Andy Rose and the rookie from UCLA hits it first time into the left corner to give the Seattle Sounders a well deserved 1-0 lead over the NASL side. Joe Nasco didn't have a chance at this one. We've seen Osvaldo Alonso strike those from outside the area as well as Alex Caskey but I wouldn't forget about Andy Rose. It's great to see that we're getting a lot of production from the midfield.
In the 47th minute, the Sounders doubled their advantage. Cordell Cato, who had an excellent performance, sent Ozzie Alonso in behind with only the keeper to beat and Alonso slotted it inside the far corner for his first of the season.
Six minutes later, Atlanta pulled one back. Shane Moroney came forward from his right back spot and fed Reinaldo Navia at the top of the area. Navia struck the ball first time low into the right corner to cut the Sounders lead to one. That was until Alex Caskey came right back and scored his first Sounders goal and more importantly, to restore Seattle's two goal lead.
In the 63rd minute, the Sounders started running away with this match. After a turnover in the midfield by the Silverbacks, the Sounders stormed back the other way and Ozzie Alonso fed Sammy Ochoa who was able to keep him self onside and smash the ball inside the left post to make it 4-1 Sounders. Ochoa was not done there. In the 66th minute, David Estrada looked to get in on the act as his shot from the top of the penalty area was blocked by Martyn Lancaster, but Sammy Ochoa was right there to follow up and curl his shot into the far corner to put the icing on the cake in this third round U.S. Open Cup match.
Observations:
It was good to see Ozzie Alonso get some minutes in this one since he was banned for two matches in MLS play. I'm expecting him to get the start again next Tuesday in Seattle's fourth round matchup against Cal FC, who of course stunned the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field. Alonso is considered to be one of the best if not the best holding midfielder in Major League Soccer and he did very well holding the fort last night and also picking up a goal. He's a great all around athlete and rarely have I seen him have a bad game.
Sammy Ochoa had a two goal night which was the first of his career. Despite his performance, the MLS and U.S. Open Cup are two different levels and I'm not sure Ochoa at the level to start MLS matches just yet. Ochoa does have the potential to score a lot of goals and he did show that against the Atlanta Silverbacks, but remember he spent about 5-6 years with Estudiantes Tecos in Mexico where he got almost little to no playing time so his form still needs a little work. Eddie Johnson has been dealing with the same situation during his time in Europe, but Johnson has more experience than Ochoa has and his work rate is much higher than Ochoa's. I do think Ochoa will be around for a while and I do think he's going to be a starter in the future. Again, he has the potential to score a lot of goals.
Another good turnout at the Starfire Sports Complex by the Sounders FC Supporters despite the debate this past week about this match being moved from Atlanta to Seattle. Here's the point though, sure Atlanta would've sold this match out had they not agreed to move the match to Seattle but the fact is Atlanta is a crappy Sports City and they would not even come close to helping out in terms of increasing the growth of American Soccer. Which is why they won't be getting an MLS team. It won't happen anytime soon at least.
It was good to see the Sounders bounce back from their 4 match winless draught in MLS and get a win here to close out this long month. It's also nice to see that they're going to be at home for the fourth round against Cal FC. An amateur side who beat the Portland Timbers on their home ground. Now that's just sad. I mean really, when was the last time an amateur club beat a Major League Soccer team? I mean really the Sounders got themselves an easy opponent for the fourth round. Trust me, Seattle will be too tough to handle for Cal FC.

Three football players gone
Troy head football coach Larry Blakeney said that quarterback Luke Barnes, linebacker Brandon Powe and safety Angelo Hadley wouldn't be back with the team.
Barnes, who redshirted last year, is heading to junior college to work on his grades.
"We hope he can get back with us," Blakeney said. "There is a plan in place."
Hadley had 28 tackles last year as a reserve. Powe had just transferred in January from junior college. Both violated a team and/or university policy, Blakeney said, and neither will be back.
"Powe didn't express to us that he wanted to come back, but he also wasn't invited to come back," Blakeney said.
Stuffed Livestock Furnishings From Italy's Armin Blasbichler Studio.
Given my posts on tattooed pigs and pigskins received so many controversial reactions, I can only imagine how these tables from Armin Blasbichler Studio, which combine furniture design with taxidermy, are going to go over.
Orson I and Orson II are part of a limited series of tables which feature stuffed livestock incorporated into the design by the Italian multidisciplinary studio.

Postseason baseball notes
Troy is working to get back into a regional, as the Trojans played at Vanderbilt in 2011. |
Just had a nice chat with coach Bobby Pierce about where things are. I'll turn this into a print story sometime next week when the spring/summer signees are released by the school, and they will fill some needs there with probably four JUCO players.
Troy won 6 of its last 7 three-game sets, if you include the tournament, and lose four seniors going to next year. Troy usually had fewer than the allotted 27 roster spots for conference games because of injuries and defections but the Trojans were still able to finish strong.
"No doubt about that (it gives us offseason momentum)," Pierce said. "I'm very encouraged with the way our team rallied in the second half of the season. The fact we ended on a very positive note, despite unfortunately not reaching the Sun Belt Tournament championship even though we went 2-1, it certainly should build momentum for next year. The challenge is for our team to get back to the upper echelon of the Sun Belt Conference."
***Pierce is still a strong advocate for round robin play in the Sun Belt Tournament. When the coaches in the conference debated this, they voted to do it on a two-year trial run. They'll vote again on the issue in August. Pros are that (1) Teams are better prepared for a regional with fewer games (2) the host team gets a 3-gate minimum to help with expenses and (3) each team knows who they are playing, what day and what time. The "con" is a belief that there are "meaningless games" to be played when the pool champions are already decided, but Pierce said he doesn't believe in "meaningless games" because they can give young players experience and give a team a chance to finish the season with a win, etc.
***The MLB Draft is early next week and three seniors - Tyler Ray, Tyler Hannah and Boone Shear - have a chance to get picked somewhere. Pierce doesn't think any underclassmen or signees would be drafted high enough to sign.
***From the fall signees, some immediate pitching help will come from some talented players. RHP Tanner Hicks went 10-1 with a 2.76 ERA at Central Alabama Community College and will challenge for the No. 1 spot. RHP Will Starling pitched Southern Union to the World Series as a freshman and didn't have quite as good of a sophomore year, but is expected to compete for a weekend spot. Starling went 5-6, 4.85 ERA, 4 saves this year but was 11-4, 2.89 ERA as a freshman. At the back end, Matthew Howard (5-2, 1.46 ERA, 9 saves) from Northwest Florida State is a 2-time Fireman of the Year (award for closers). Trae Santos, a LHP/1B/OF from NW Florida State, can also come in and help. Santos was 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 IP, but hit .311 with a team-best 5 HR and 25 RBIs. Freshman LHP Levi Tate from Enterprise will also get a long look.
Some bad news, as talented LHP signee Ben Tidwell is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews and could be facing surgery.
***Some guys coming off injuries are progressing well. Pierce said LHPs Ryan Sorce and Shane McCain, key contributors in 2011, are on track. First baseman Kyle Brown had a second hip surgery but should be fine. RHP Adam Purdy will be ready for fall after ankle/foot surgery. RHP William Shell wasn't on the roster this year because he suffered an Achilles injury over winter break. OF Josh McDorman should be ready to go after shoulder surgery. He played a little bit this year but should get a medical redshirt. Catcher Brandon Brown played most of the year with a torn ligament in his thumb, but he'll get that fixed this summer.
***Outfielder Hayden Hillyer told coaches he was transferring to a smaller school, but not sure where yet.
***The summer comes at a good time for pitchers Thomas Austin and Nate Hill, both of whom took a heavy workload but will be resting this summer for their senior years. Hill has 35 appearances, 79 IP, a 7-2 record with a 3.53 ERA. Austin went 3-5 with a 2.80 ERA in 32 appearances/64 IPs.
***Some Troy players will be playing in summer leagues. LHP Jimmy Hodgskin is playing in the Cape Cod League for Hyannis. 1B Logan Pierce is playing for the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate League. 3B Danny Collins is also playing in that league. OF Clay Holcomb is playing in a Perfect Game League in New York. Others will play in some nearby leagues.
***Troy is tentatively scheduled to open up next year against Florida A&M. Trojans are having a hard time getting quality teams on the schedule out of conference. Auburn won't play them anymore, and Alabama is back to only playing them in Tuscaloosa.
***All in all, I think Troy has a chance to be pretty good next year. The offense will be there, the defense will be there with a good shortstop (and that should be addressed with the spring signings). The key will be pitching - they just need to have better luck with injuries and have more guys pitching well as the season goes on.

Anderson finds his way to Canada
Jimmie Anderson, shown before the WKU game, is currently in Edmonton (Lamar Higgins photo) |
Former Troy cornerback Jimmie Anderson didn't get too discouraged when no NFL team chose him in the recent NFL Draft. He had a pretty good option waiting up north.
Anderson, who started for most of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, is now in Edmonton, going through camp with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. Anderson had two interceptions and 37 tackles last year, missing two games after his appendix came out, and three interceptions in 2010.
"They (Eskimos personnel) came to the Arkansas State game and told me they were interested," Anderson said. "They also came to our Pro Day (at Troy). They had me come up there and I met some people and they told me they wanted me to come play for them. The NFL Draft came and went but I couldn't pass up an opportunity like this, so I decided to come here."
Anderson got to Edmonton on Tuesday and began practice on Wednesday. Edmonton is in Alberta, just below the center of the Canadian province.
"It's cold," Anderson said. "It's a lot different from Alabama and Texas. When we woke up, it was 40 degrees and during the day, it's 60-something. The sun doesn't go down until 11:30. When I woke up at 5 a.m., the sun was already back up."
Anderson didn't know anyone when he got to Edmonton, but there are some familiar names on the roster for national college football fans, including former Oregon/Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.
Anderson is trying to earn a spot on the regular season roster during camp. The Eskimos have two preseason games - June 15 at Calgary and June 21 at home vs. British Columbia. The season opener is June 30 at home against Toronto.
Along with the different geographic climate, the CFL also has different rules than the NFL, which is where Anderson aspires to be one day. The field is 110 yards long and there are 12 players on each side of the ball instead of 11. Three receivers can be in motion at once, and inside receivers can get a 10-yard head start behind the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. Anderson has been working as an inside cornerback.
"The competition isn't really much different, but I'm always working hard," Anderson said. "I'm trying to play as long as I can play and hopefully I can get back to the states (to play)."
Magnificent Seven? 2012 French Open - Rafa Round 1
Ladies and Gentlemen, Our Hero, Rafael Nadal, has begun his quest for a record seventh French Open title this week. He looks to be in great physical and mental shape and he is he favorite coming in to the tournament. Being the favorite doesn't always mean much. Serena was the favorite on the women's side and she sadly was bounced in the first round. Shocking! This year Rafa is back wearing a pink shirt and pink shoelaces as part of his ensemble. The last time he wore pink here was the only year he lost. The superstitious fool in me is wondering what the superstitious fool in him is thinking. Maybe he truly doesn't care, but it makes me NERVOUS.
Luckily his first round match did not prove a horrible challenge for him. He took out Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Rafa raced out to a 6-2, 4-0 lead and then suddenly lost a little focus. It can happen when playing a long match, especially when your opponent is not really threatening you. Bolelli broke Rafa during that lapse and them held serve. Then he had 4 break point chances to bring it to 4-3 on Rafa's next service game, Bolelli couldn't convert them though, and Rafa held. Then Nadal just ran away with the rest of it. One match down, six to go until he is Champion once more!
Next up he gets Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan. Shouldn't present a big challenge, but I'm sure Rafa will take nothing for granted. As the saying goes, you can't win a Grand Slam in the first week, but you can definitely lose it. I believe Rafa will persevere! VAMOS!
The Les Miserables Movie: The Dream May Live, But Is All Hope Lost?
I'm not sure how I feel about the Les Miserables movie coming out. On the one hand, judging by the first trailer alone, it looks kinda awesome. I like the cast. It looks beautilful. It's hard to mess up the songs. In theory, I should really enjoy it. I remind myself that I was also looking forward to Phantom of The Opera and Nine and both of those were disasters. Still, I have faith in this production. So on the one hand, hooray for a good movie adaptation! On the other hand, will there ever be a time in my life when I get these effing songs out of my head??
I don't know what it is about the Les Mis score. Is it the lush, romantic, classic melodies that pretty much anybody can sing if they want to, but that a really talented singer can just kill? Is the scope of the story and the rich characters? The show's been around for 25 years now, and lets say the songs have been locked in my brain for at least 20 of them. I sang Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, Stars, Bring Him Home and Drink with Me a lot in vocal lessons through college. Then other songs and shows knocked it out of rotation in my brain for a while, but then in my late 20's it all came surging back without my consent. I found myself singing through the score at the randomest of times. Like the WHOLE SCORE. I don't even have the full score on my iPod, I would just sing it to myself from memory. Then the need to sing it started dying down a bit again, but then that 25th Anniversary Concert came out on PBS and my brain was once again lost to me. I didn't become obsessed with watching the concert (though I did have it saved on my DVR for a long time) because Nick Jonas's limited vocal ability and horrible breath support really ruined Marius for me, but once again the soundtrack was on heavy rotation in my brain. I had almost -ALMOST - gotten over it again, and now come the movie trailer is here. The advertising for the movie means I'll be singing the songs to myself at least through the end of the year since it doesn't open until Christmas. And then what if it's actually really good and gets nominated for Oscars??? That will stretch things until March! And then if I like the move, what then? Will I breakdown and buy it on Blu-Ray? Will I watch it whenever I have to clean my living room, or go through my billing statements or fold my laundry - like I do with Kill Bill, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Chicago, LOTR and Aliens? The songs will never go away. The movie means I have no hope. Why even try to fight it? It's not worth it. Life has killed the dream I dreamed of not singing "I Dreamed a Dream" to myself forever and ever.
For the record, the song I sing to myself the most is the short but sweet "Every Day" between Marius and Cosette. It's like the show is speaking directly to me: With all the years ahead of us, I will never go away and we will be together everyday...

Reclaimed Wood Mixtape Coffee Table by Jeff Skierka Goes Into Production.
This unique handmade coffee table has been getting so much buzz that Seattle-based designer/craftsman Jeff Skierka and his partner, graphic designer Roslyn Hyde are working as fast as they can to get it into production.
The Mixtape Table is a 12:1 scaled replica of a cassette tape turned into a functional coffee table. Made of reclaimed maple, walnut and lucite, the 47.25" x 30" x 5" handcrafted piece has a protective 3/8" plexiglass top. The table is completely reversible to feature sides A and B.
The first prototype and one of a kind table has been quickly gathering attention across the internet, with many fans requesting its production.
Jeff and Roslyn are responding to the demand with future versions which will be CNC machined out of high grade plywood (with a variety of ply combinations) and a glass top. Both plywood and handmade hardwood versions will be soon available.
above: Jeff and partner Roslyn in their Seattle workshop
According to Roslyn, Jeff is speaking with manufacturers with CNC capabilities, water jet cutters for the glass top, visiting local plywood and hardwood suppliers, among a list of other things over the next couple of weeks. He is planning on having a rough estimate for the plywood Mixtape Table by the end of the week. Jeff will also be creating 1 or 2 more prototypes as well. If you are interested in a hardwood handmade table, those will also be available to order soon.
Please email them at jeffskierkadesigns@gmail.com for more information and to be put on their mailing list.

In ‘One Empire Wide’ discarded Canadiana is reinterpreted by the artist as architectural models of ice fishing huts. Akin to their full sized counterparts, these scaled down versions engage the vernacular of reclamation, but in lieu of scrap building materials they reuse the detritus of recent Canadian history for their designs. From disposable fast food containers, failed companies, defunct government commissions, abandoned corporate branding to outdated military technology and emigrant sports franchises, these discarded cultural and social fragments are thoughtfully crafted into ingenious, inhabitable structures.
Each lovely little architectural model will be made in an edition of four and available for purchase at the price of $500 a piece.
