WEATHER: Paducah, Fort Campbell and Gibson Co. Doppler radars to be upgraded

Gibson County radar's upgrade scheduled for early February

PADUCAH, Ky. (NWS) ― Improvements to three National Weather Service Doppler radars which cover a large portion the Tri-State area will get underway starting this coming week.

The Paducah, Ky. Doppler radar will be upgraded with dual polarization capabilities beginning Monday. The upgrade will take up to two weeks, during which time data from the radar will be unavailable.

This much-anticipated upgrade will result in 14 new radar products that will enable continued improvement in products and services provided by the National Weather Service's Paducah office. The new radar data will help forecasters identify the type of precipitation falling, as well as improve rainfall estimates.

The upgrade of the Paducah radar will be closely followed by identical updates to the Fort Campbell, Ky.and Owensville (Evansville), Ind. radars. The Fort Campbell upgrade will begin on or around Jan. 21, while the Owensville upgrade will begin on or around Feb. 4.

Evansville and Taswell, Ind. residents to appear on TPIR later this month

CBS hasn't released names of contestants

CBS has announced that an Evansville resident will appear as a contestant on the Oct. 24 episode of The Price Is Right.

We don't yet know who the contestant is, as the network does not release this information ahead of time, but we hope to find out.

In addition to the unnamed Evansville resident, someone from the small community of Taswell, Ind. (which is located in Crawford County) will appear on the Oct. 23 show.

BRIEF: Evansville, Terre Haute move up in Arbitron rankings for fall ratings period

Both cities climb three spots

Evansville and Terre Haute are a little higher on Arbitron's totem pole for the fall ratings period.

The radio ratings company's new list was published on Wednesday, and it shows that Evansville, which was formerly #165 on the list of radio markets, has climbed three spots to #162. Terre Haute went from #210 to #207.

Other cities around the region held steady, with St. Louis remaining at #22, Indianapolis at #40, Nashville at #45 and Louisville at #54.

Evansville and Terre Haute radio stations have two ratings periods each year, in the spring and fall.

UPDATED: NOAA Weather Radio stations in Evansville, McLeansboro down again

Fiber optic cable failure to blame for outage that also affects Gibson County and Ft. Campbell radars

UPDATE #2, 8:30 p.m.: Both the Gibson County radar and the Evansville NWR transmitter are back in operation.

UPDATE #1, 5:50 p.m.: The National Weather Service Paducah WFO reports that both the Evansville and McLeansboro NOAA Weather Radio transmitters as well as the Gibson County, Ind. and Fort Campbell, Ky. weather radars will remain down "through tonight." The outage, which began this morning, is due to the failure of a fiber optic cable.

PREVIOUSLY: The NOAA Weather Radio transmitters in Evansville (KIG76) and McLeansboro (KXI52) are down again, the Paducah weather forecast office reports.

Blame for the outage is being placed on a broken phone line, Eyewitness News meteorologist David Heckard tweeted earlier. The Paducah office, officially, would only say it was "an apparent communications failure."

In addition, the Gibson County Doppler radar (KVWX) is also down.

A sizable portion of the Tri-State is under a slight risk for severe weather today, making speedy repairs essential.

COMMENTARY: Couric's fans take to Twitter in effort to #BringKatieToEvansville

Twitter hashtag campaign started in an effort to bring show to Evansville TV

WAWV. WHAS11. WSIL. WNKY-CBS. KMOV. WSMV.

Those are a few of the stations around the region which will air Katie Couric's new ABC-produced self-titled talk show, which premieres this afternoon.

You'll note that none of these stations are located in Evansville.

Instead, Evansville's ABC affiliate, WEHT Local, will air The Jeff Probst Show. Now, in my opinion, Probst is a good guy, but why WEHT would choose his program over something the network came along with is beyond me, especially when so many other stations around us were eager to get on board with Katie.

Even a spot on Local 7 WTVW would've worked.

But, incredibly, Katie's nowhere to be found if all you get is Evansville local channels.

I'm not alone in wondering why she's not here. Several readers have expressed dismay that they won't get the chance to watch the show, so they've created a Twitter hashtag: #BringKatieToEville.

My feeling is that it's worth a shot to draw some attention to the situation, so I've joined up. Would you like to watch Katie? If you're on Twitter, use the hashtag above. Nielsen releases 2012-13 TV market rankings

Despite small drop in the number of TV households, rankings for our region remain the same

Nielsen released the list of television market rankings for 2012-13 today, and the big story is that, while the overall estimated number of TV homes across the country dropped again, the drop didn't make enough difference to change the rankings for any of the markets in our part of the country.

Nationwide, the number of TV households stands at 114,173,690. That's down nearly a half of million - or less than 1% - from last year's 114,649,310.

So how did the markets in our neck o' the woods fare? Let's look at them from largest to smallest:

In this region, St. Louis is the largest TV market, and remains so this year at #21, based on its 1,243,490 TV households, down from 1,253,920 last year.
Indianapolis bounced back to #26 last year and remains there for 2012-13. Indiana's largest TV market now has 1,089,700 TV homes, compared to 1,109,970 last year.
Since 2008, Nashville has been #29, and that hasn't changed this year. The market has 1,014,910 homes, down a fairly sizable sum from the 1,024,560 one year ago.
Louisville holds the #48 spot for the second consecutive year. The Kentuckiana market now has 670,880 households (compared to 674,050 in 2012).
Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg holds tight to the #81 spot with 388,340 TV households (down from 393,330).
Evansville remains #104 on Nielsen's list with 284,040 TV households (compared to 287,880 last year).
Terre Haute is still #154 with 139,600 households (down from 142,780).
Bowling Green stays at #182 with 78,880 households (down from 79,990 last year).

Despite not losing position, all of the stations, as you can see above, lost TV households - some more than others. Among the three larger markets in the region, Indianapolis was the biggest loser, shedding 20,270 households in just the past year. St. Louis lost the next highest number, at 10,430. Nashville was third with a decline of 9,650. Louisville's loss was least at 3,170.

Among the mid-sized markets, Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg shed the most at 4,990; Evansville lost 3,840.

The smaller markets lost even less: Terre Haute lost 3,180 households, with Bowling Green losing 1,110.

DTV America Corp. gets new digital LPTV construction permits for Evansville, Cape Girardeau

One station OK'd for Evansville, four for Cape

As I suspected in July, the FCC has approved the request of Sunrise, Fla.-based DTV America Corporation and has issued a construction permit for the company to build a digital low-power TV station on channel 12 in Evansville.

The station was also given the call sign W12DN-D.

If W12DN-D is built, it will broadcast from South Central Media's tower on Mt. Auburn Rd. next to the radio company's studios, covering an area from far eastern White Co., Ill. to Tennyson, Ind. west to east, and from Princeton, Ind. to roughly the Ohio River north to south.

It's unclear what type of programming the station will broadcast.

DTV America isn't just getting approval to build in Evansville - it's received FOUR construction permits for Cape Girardeau, Mo., too. Those permits will allow the company to build stations on channels 24 through 26 and also on channel 30 (K24KY-D, K25NS-D, K26ME-D and K30NE-D).

All would broadcast from an AT&T communications tower near Marble Hill in Bollinger Co., Mo. K24KY and K26ME would be 10 kW stations, while K25NS and K30NE would be 15 kW. All would cover an area between Perryville, Mo. to the north and Crowley's Ridge Conservation Area to the south and from Fredericktown, Mo. to the west and the Mississippi River to the east.

It's not yet known what would be on those stations, either.

Van Doren leaves Nexstar's Springfield, Mo. duo after 14 years to join Granite Broadcasting's WKBW

Former WTVW and WPSD anchor and reporter Polly Van Doren has a new job.

After 14 years as news director at Nexstar Broadcasting's KOZL/KOLR duopoly in Springfield, Mo. (and 18 years total), Van Doren is relocating to Buffalo, N.Y., where she will take over as news director at Granite Broadcasting's ABC affiliate, WKBW.

Van Doren was an anchor and managing editor at WTVW from 1990 to 1994, and anchored and reported at WPSD from 1981 to 1988.

KUDOS: Eyewitness News carries Romney's speech at Stepto's live

Local 7 only local station to broadcast presidential candidate live in Evansville

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: 14WFIE did carry the speech on 14news.com. I did not catch that previously, and for that, I apologize. However, Local 7 remains the only station to air it on television. New text is in blue below.

If you wanted to see Mitt Romney's speech at Stepto's BBQ in Evansville live this afternoon, there was just one place to turn on your TV - Local 7.

Eyewitness News carried the former Massachusetts governor's speech in its entirety as the Republican presidential candidate stumped for U.S. Senate candidate and Vanderburgh County native Richard Mourdock.

14WFIE stayed with its Olympic coverage on 14.1 and weather on 14Xtra, but carried the speech online at 14news.com.

Kudos to the folks at Eyewitness News for giving everyone the opportunity to see what few otherwise would have been able to experience. This was a very good thing.

Katie set for Sept. 10 premiere - but not in Evansville?

Show's website has no listing for Evansville market, although surrounding area stations will carry Couric's program

Katie Couric's self-titled new show is set to debut in a little less than two months - Sept. 10, to be precise - but it appears that the program will not be available in the immediate Evansville TV market.

Using the channel finder on the show's website, no Evansville stations are listed. Of course, with nearly 60 days to go, it's entirely possible that the show could get picked up ... maybe.

Several surrounding area stations are listed, however, including:

WAWV-ABC (ch. 38.1), Terre Haute
WHAS11 (ch. 11.1), Louisville
WSIL-3 (chs. 3.1 and 3.2), Harrisburg
WNKY-CBS (ch. 40.2), Bowling Green
WSMV-4 (ch. 4.1), Nashville
KMOV-4 (ch. 4.1), St. Louis

So if you live in an area where you can get one or more of these, you'll be able to see what Katie's show is all about. As for the rest of us, evidently we'll have to wait and see.

NOAA Weather Radio stations in McLeansboro and Evansville off-air

The National Weather Service office in Paducah reports early this morning that the NOAA Weather Radio stations in McLeansboro, Ill. (KXI-52, 162.4 MHz) and Evansville (KIG-76, 162.55 MHz) are off the air due to a telecommunications failure.

Listeners may hear intermittent broadcasts from the two stations as technicians work to get things back in proper working order.

The McLeansboro transmitter covers Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline and White counties in Southeastern Illinois.

Evansville's transmitter covers all or part of Edwards, Wabash and White counties in Southeastern Illinois; Dubois, Gibson, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties in Southwestern Indiana; and Henderson and Union counties in Western Kentucky.

FCC may grant another LPTV construction permit for Evansville

DTV America Corp.'s proposed station would broadcast on Channel 12

The FCC today released a list of proposed digital low-power TV (LPTV) construction permits, and on the list is one for Evansville.

DTV America Corporation of Sunrise, Fla., filed an application on Nov. 3, 2010, seeking the Commission's permission to build a 3,000-watt low-power station on Channel 12 to serve the Tri-State's largest city, and, if there are no objections within the next 30 days, the company should receive its permit to build.

If the as-yet-unnamed station is built, it would broadcast from South Central Media's tower on Mt. Auburn Rd. next to the radio company's studios. It would cover an area from far eastern White Co., Ill. to Tennyson, Ind. west to east, and from Princeton, Ind. to roughly the Ohio River north to south.

It's unclear what type of programming the station would broadcast if built, but I'll keep looking for that information.

The proposed Channel 12 station would be the third new LPTV station in the area given the go-ahead in the recent past. Christian broadcaster EICB-TV East, LLC was cleared to build one of its stations on Channel 19 (W19DL-D) in June 2010, and DTV America 1, LLC was given permission to build W27DH-D on Channel 27 around the same time. Neither of those stations are yet on the air, and the status of their plans is unknown.
