Troy lost 83-78 to UL-Lafayette Saturday night. Read HERE.
Give Troy credit for not folding the tent. Down 16 with four minutes to go, Troy got it to within three, but couldn't get any closer.
Troy, what it seems, has 3 legit offensive weapons night in and night out - point guard Mo Weathers and wing players Emil Jones and Justin Wright. All three were aggressive taking it to the hole. If Troy had a scoring threat down low that was as big as ULL's two horses (you know, around 6'7, 250), and a 2-guard who could knock down the three at about 45% (a lot to ask), Troy would have a much better team.
Maybe that'll come in next year's recruiting class. Maybe that 2-guard is on the roster, as Alan Jones, R.J. Scott and Daronte Clark have all had their moments, but have been inconsistent. Troy has Ray Chambers down low returning next year, but he's more of a face-up shooter. Troy bigs usually get better under Maestri - Tim Owens has, but he's a defensive guy and not an offensive threat - and Troy has 3 bigs redshirting, but they're all under 200 pounds.
**Troy has a baseball scrimmage at 10 and baseball/softball fan day at 2. I won't be there, but maybe you will? Should be a good event.
**Congrats to the women's team for getting its first Sun Belt win against ULL. 13 of Troy's 16 players have been injured this year. Mookie Smith would be a 15 ppg scorer, but had to give up the sport because of concussions. DeAngela Sword can't practice because of a foot injury and it worsened. She also battles sickle cell anemia. Sarah McAppion scored 17, but she rarely practices because she's got a bum ankle. Sword and McAppion are in walking boots when not playing basketball.
Troy's women have the worst facilities in the league and only have 2 full-time assistant coaches when the other teams in the league have 3. Not really fair, is it? These girls give plenty of effort, but the ball just hasn't bounced their way this year.
**Don't forget, the SUPER BOWL is tonight. Jernigan/Tynes/Osi (Giants) take on the Patriots. Troy's a Giants town today, but I think the Patriots win by two scores. Of course, I thought that four years ago too and it didn't work out.
Woes continue for Trojans
