I had another opportunity the other day to hit up the City Market for lunch, and I had a single goal in mind. The “My Dad’s” Sweet Corn chowder at Circle City Sweets. I had gotten the email update from them saying they would have it and I love love love “My Dad’s” corn (I buy it weekly when it is in season at the Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market). I figured I would also get something else to go along as well.
It just so happened, that I was also there on Thursday, which is often “beignet day” at Circle City Sweets. As I was waiting in line, I heard someone get an order, and was told there were only a couple left. So, of course, not wanting to miss out, I got an order too. I also got a Caprese salad to go along with my soup (there were some great sounding sandwiches as well, but I didn’t think I could eat that much!). 
Starting with the soup, it was truly the pure sweet essence of the sweet corn. It was completely smooth though, not the chunky kind of soup I think of when I hear the word “chowder.” I mean this soup had been through the food mill. Normally, I like a little texture to my soup, but this was delicious, literally like sweet corn flavored cream. It was nicely seasoned, so you didn’t feel like it needed anything. Although I did tear up the slice of French bread I got with it and dropped them in the soup and ate it like that. I rather enjoyed the soup-soaked pieces of bread.
The Caprese was fine—a lot of lettuce, a few slices of tomato and a few slices of fresh mozzarella with a balsamic vinaigrette and a thin slice of cucumber around the whole thing. I could have used a touch more of the balsamic flavor on the salad, although I appreciated that the leaves had been tossed in the dressing beforehand. It was a light and refreshing thing to eat on a hot day, but it couldn’t really hold a candle to the flavor of the soup.
Lastly, I had the beignets. They were also delicious. I mean how can you go wrong with little puffs of dough fried to order and heavily dusted with powdered sugar? They were fresh and warm, and had just the right amount of chewiness but with a slightly crisp exterior. I have had several Circle City dessert items in my day (we had cream puffs from there at a party once and people never stopped talking about them) and they certainly excel at them, although this soup was really good as well (the owner’s husband does the soups). Although, like I said, I was intrigued by the sandwiches—the shrimp sandwich sounded really good.
I also appreciate the lack of Styrofoam in this stand, although, would love to be offered to just have my salad on a paper plate instead of the plastic to go container. I am sure if I were a City Market regular that I would appreciate the ever-changing menu at Circle City though. They have different soups, sandwiches and sweets each day as far as I can tell.
I am continuing to work my way through the place…which place to go next?
