The Indiana Broadcasters Association handed out its annual Spectrum Awards on Saturday night in Indianapolis, and radio and TV stations covering Southwestern Indiana accounted for a sizable number of awards.
Terre Haute's WTWO-NBC 2 and WTHI Hi-99 FM won their respective TV and radio Station of the Year awards, as did Vincennes University's WVUB-91.1 FM.
NBC 2 also won first place in the Breaking News Story and Weathercast categories, second place in the Feature/Use of Medium, Sportscast and Newscast categories, and third place in the Commercial category.
WTHI-TV 10 brought home firsts in the Breaking Local News Story, Feature/Use of Medium and Cross Platform Use of Television categories. The station also took second place in the Station of the Year, General News Story and Weathercast categories, with thirds in the Newscast and Community Involvement categories and the Service to Indiana category for "Raise Your Sleeve."
On the radio, several area stations did quite well:
- WIKY-104.1 FM (Evansville) won first place in the Breaking News Story category for its coverage of the Newburgh Tornado; second place in the Newscast category for its 1 p.m. newscast covering the Leap Day tornado; second in the Mini-Documentary or Series category for the United Way; and second in the Radio Station Broadcast Personality or Team category for the WIKY Morning Show.
- WSTO-96.1 FM (Evansville) won first place in the Best Promotional Campaign category for the "Nothing Ever Happens in My City Tour"; and the station's Claire Ballard won third place in the Radio Station Broadcast Personality or Team category.
- Hi-99 (Terre Haute), in addition to its Station of the Year win, placed third in the Commercial category for "Smokin' Hot Dad."
- Hi-99's sister station, WWVR-105.5 FM The River (also Terre Haute) won second place in Community Involvement for the Coats for Kids program.
- WVUB-91.1 FM (Vincennes) won first place in Community Involvement for the fourth annual Bark in the Park; Best On-Air Promotional Announcement for its Mother's Day promo; second place in the Mini-Documentary or Series category for the WVUB News Anti-Meth Awareness Series; and third in Community Involvement for "Meth - Not Even Once."
- WFML-96.7 FM (Vincennes) won second place in both the Commercial Series and Humorous Commercial categories for its La Cucina Italian Restaurant spots.
- WBDC-100.9 FM (Huntingburg) won first place in the Sports category for its coverage of Northeast Dubois High School's state championship basketball game and first in the Humorous Commercial category for "Hot Tub."
- WITZ-104.7 FM (Jasper) won first place in the Commercial Series category for Bowhunting by Great Outdoors.
