WKMS presents special programming for the holiday season

Company for the Holidays begins Thanksgiving Day


Murray State University's public radio station, WKMS-91.3 FM, which can be heard in parts of the Tri-State on WKMD-90.9 FM (Madisonville, Ky.) and online at wkms.org, has announced its holiday programming lineup, entitled Company for the Holidays.

The special programs begin on Thanksgiving Day and continue through New Year's Day.  You'll hear specials about what Thanksgiving really means, great Christmas songs, holiday stories ... even dubstep!

Yes, friends, WKMS will have something for everyone in the family this holiday season, so tune in and turn on to the holiday season starting next week.

NOVEMBER 22
Giving Thanks 11 a.m.
John Birge creates a thoughtful, contemporary reflection on the meaning of Thanksgiving that includes a tribute to writer Nora Ephron.
DECEMBER 4
Roll Credits: "A Hollywood Holiday" 7 p.m.
Hear the music that made great films from "A Christmas Carol" to "Polar Express" come alive with the warmth and sparkle of the season.
DECEMBER 5
Holidays at Murray State 2012 7 p.m.
The Murray State University Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra and featured soloists highlight this 9th annual seasonal special.
DECEMBER 10
Chanuka in Story and Song Noon
Leonard Nimoy hosts stories of Chanukah alongside The Western Wind performing Ladino songs of Spanish Jews, Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe and modern Israeli tunes.
DECEMBER 13
The Retro Cocktail Hour Christmas Party (2011)  7 p.m.
Think aluminum Christmas trees and spiked egg nog with tunes from Nat King Cole, Blue Hawaiians, and more.
DECEMBER 16 
A Christmas Celebration from the Paducah Symphony Orchestra 11 a.m (on HD1 and 2)
Celebrate the holidays with this exciting performance of the PSO featuring voices of the PSO Choruses and Murray State Choir. Please note: This airs on HD-2 at the same time.
Hanukkah Lights 2012 7 p.m.
Hanukkah Lights features NPR's Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz reading stories and memoirs written by acclaimed authors expressly for the show.
DECEMBER 17
A Christmas Celebration from the Paducah Symphony Orchestra 9 a.m. (on HD-2)
Celebrate the holidays with this exciting performance of the PSO featuring voices of the PSO Choruses and Murray State Choir.
Christmas with Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs Noon
The choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges combine for their annual celebration of spirituals and carols.  
DECEMBER 18
Jazz Piano Christmas XXIII Noon
Enjoy a concert of Ellis Marsalis, Jason Moran, and other artists performing their favorite holiday songs in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
DECEMBER 19
A Chanticleer Christmas Noon
America’s finest 12-voice male choir performs best-loved Christmas songs from Gregorian chant to Gospel.

Brad and John bring the Christmas funk with James Brown, Aretha Franklin,  Syl Johnson and other masters of groove.
A Café Jazz Christmas with George Eldred 10 - 11 pm
Enjoy an hour of holiday jazz featuring some of George's favorite tunes.

Echoes of Christmas Noon
The Dale Warland Singers present moving selections of choral classics celebrating Christmas.
A Paul Winter Solstice Concert 7 p.m.
The darkest night of the year is lit up with a live program from New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine celebrating global musical traditions.
House Blend Festive Holiday Show 9 p.m.
Host David Weatherly cooks up groove beats, funk, and jazz fusion for your festive enjoyment.
The Retro Cocktail House Christmas Party (2012) 11 p.m.
You'll "cha cha all the way" with crooner classics, over-stimulated stereophonic pop, and seasonal tiki tunes by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee and more.
DECEMBER 22
Music from the Front Porch Christmas 10 a.m.
Host Mark Welch throws on his Santa hat and "decks the halls" with holiday treats of bluegrass, folk, and acoustic  Christmas favorites.
Juke Joint Holiday Extravaganza 1 p.m.
Take a break from the traditional holiday fare with Rick and Kala as they mix the classics with the eclectic. It's guaranteed you'll hear a version of "The Nutcracker Suite" you've never heard before.
Beyond the Edge Xmas 8 p.m.
Tracy goes beyond holiday bright with seasonal favorites from artists including Willie Nelson, U2, and Sufjan Stevens.

It's an all-star "Vintage Christmas" with Nat King Cole, Stan Kenton, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington's version of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite."
