UPDATE, 4:50 p.m. TUESDAY: John "Digger" Pelaez, one of TheCoolTV's founders, left the following message this afternoon: "I am one of the founders of THECOOLTV. Yes, we lost Sinclair but are still committed to delivering music to fans where, when and on what device they want it. We are working to get back on with Sinclair and expand into many other broadcast markets. See my video post here: http://on.fb.me/Jo6pif."
PREVIOUSLY: Sinclair Broadcast Group has abruptly ended its nearly two-year-long affiliation with TheCoolTV, a Kansas-based music video network.
PREVIOUSLY: Sinclair Broadcast Group has abruptly ended its nearly two-year-long affiliation with TheCoolTV, a Kansas-based music video network.
The move took place on Friday afternoon, when WDKA-My49 (Paducah), KDNL-ABC30 (St. Louis) and WUXP-My30 (Nashville) joined more than 30 other Sinclair stations in pulling the subchannel off the air. Sinclair's regional engineering manager, Jim Wright, confirmed in a brief email response to a viewer that they were no longer carrying the network, but did not explain why.
Recently, TheCoolTV has been dropped by some of its other broadcast partners over the network's failure to pay for carriage as promised. Those partners included Newport Television, which is in the process of being sold to Nexstar, Sinclair and Cox, and Journal.
With Sinclair's decision to give the cold shoulder to Cool, the network now has fewer than 20 affiliates nationwide, down from a high of nearly 60.
It isn't immediately known what - if anything - will replace TheCoolTV on Sinclair's stations.
I'll keep you posted.
EDITOR'S NOTE: WDKA, KDNL and WUXP bring the number of former TheCoolTV affiliates in this part of the country to four. WTHI-TV in Terre Haute dropped the network on Sept. 1, 2011, when it picked up the Fox affiliation.
