Southward over the pile against UAB for his first touchdown / Associated Press |
Great start to the season for a pair of Trojans. Running back Shawn Southward earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors and nickel De'Von Terry earned Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Special Teams Player of the Week was UL-Lafayette's Brett Baer.
**Southward had 28 carries for 204 yards, both career highs, and three touchdowns. It was his first 100-yard game since his freshman year and he showed what he can do with bulk carries. Southward's longest run was 55 yards, which came on the next carry after a critical fumble. Southward scored on runs of 1, 7 and 5 yards.
**Terry's story is even more remarkable. He hadn't played in a football game since 2007, his senior year of high school at Enterprise High. Terry made the Troy team as a walk-on in 2010 and earned playing time as the backup to Kanorris Davis at the nickel for this fall. Terry had five tackles, a fumble recovery inside the Troy 5-yard line as UAB was driving for potentially its first score, and a momentum-turning interception in the fourth quarter when Troy held on to a 2-point lead.
**Baer had four FGs and four PATs in ULL's 40-0 win over Lamar. ULL comes to Troy this week.
