The spring signing period began on Wednesday and Troy coaches were all over the country looking for immediate impact players.
The first known signee is Tevin Calhoun, from Hill College in Texas. Calhoun is a 6-foot-7 wing forward and if the stats I'm looking at are right, scored about 12 ppg as a sophomore.
Calhoun is originally from Linden, New Jersey and made his way to Hillsboro, Texas, for junior college ball. He played as a freshman at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. Hill College is south of Dallas and north of Waco.
He signed with Creighton in the fall, but got out of that letter of intent. If a school like Creighton thinks that highly of Calhoun to sign him in the first place, then you figure he'll be a key contributor for Troy.
Here's what was said about Calhoun when he signed with Creighton originally:
Quoting Creighton head coach Greg McDermott: “Tevin Calhoun is a skilled wing that should be able to come in and stretch the defense and score the basketball. He will compete in a very tough junior college conference that should prepare him for his career at Creighton. His athletic ability will be a huge plus for our program.”
Quoting Cameron Belden (Mullen’s Roundball Review): “Tevin is a very long combo forward type with a very big upside, as more than likely will end up being a true #3 with great size at that position. He shoots the ball well from ‘3’ and possesses solid ball skills, as he is able to make plays with the ball in the open court.”
Calhoun confirmed his signing to me in a message and I'll be talking with him at some point Thursday.
Calhoun's teammate at Hill, John Odoh, is a center who has signed with North Texas.
