If you don’t think Troy’s new arena will pay dividends in recruiting, just look at what it did to get Hill College (Texas) forward Tevin Calhoun to sign with the Trojans.
“I got to see the building and where the practice gyms are going to be,” Calhoun said. “This was a big reason I chose Troy. The concourse area looks really need. They’re definitely putting money into the basketball program and when you have a school that will put money and support into the program, only good things can happen.”
Calhoun, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward, is expected to compete for immediate playing time. He averaged 12 points a game on a good Hill team that also is sending center John Odoh to North Texas.
“We had a lot of even scoring. It was a very unselfish basketball team,” Calhoun said.
Calhoun has been all over the country in his basketball exploits. He is from Linden, N.J. and played as a freshman at Kirtland Community College in Ohio. He was a teammate of Troy center Ray Chambers, and then he moved to Hillsboro, Texas for his sophomore year. Now, Calhoun will finish his career in Alabama.
“The thing I can say about basketball is that it’s taken me all over the country and given me the chance to see a bunch of new things,” Calhoun said.
Calhoun could play three positions for Troy – anywhere except true point guard and center. He was high on Troy’s target list and coaches were ecstatic when he signed. He has a 7-foot wing span.
“My ball-handling is developing and I might could play the 2 (shooting guard),” Calhoun said. “I could play the 3 (small forward) or 4 as well. Wherever they need me to play, I’ll play. My versatility is a big part of my game, along with my athleticism and ability to shoot the three and run out in the open court.
“My visit solidified everything. I had a great time getting to know the coaches and the players. The campus was real nice too.”
