Troy defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
"He had been working on it for a few weeks and Richard (Shaughnessy) helped him with his resources," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "The fact that he had already graduated and didn't find a graduate program that appealed to him, he's 24 years old and the clock's ticking... I promised I'd do everything I could to help him. He was rated in the bottom half of the NFL Draft by scouts but chose to go anyway. I hope he has great luck and gets his shot."
Blakeney said he wasn't really surprised that Massaquoi had chosen to enter the NFL Draft. The loss leaves Troy hunting for defensive ends. All four of the top ends on last year's roster have moved on - Massaquoi to the NFL, Brandon Boudreaux and John Robles to graduation and Xavian Evans to academic ineligibility.
***Mentioned 3 guys Wednesday who were ineligible or transferred out (Xavian Evans, DJ Jones, Gavin Ellis). Add one name - defensive tackle Tony Gillespie won't be back next year. Blakeney said he had bolted out before school got out.
*** Will try to locate Massaquoi to get his thoughts
***Who are the defensive ends next year? I'd guess this all but certain pushes Tony Davis to an end. Brandon Timmons was signed to play right away and he's here this spring. Deon Lee and D.J. Johnson redshirted as freshmen last year. If Troy switches to more of a 3-4 look, which is a real possibility, you could see another defensive tackle get a look.
