Back in 2004, the state of Illinois introduced a 30% tax credit for filmmakers on goods and services spent in the state. Eight years later, it's been a big boon for the Prairie State's coffers.
Gov. Pat Quinn's office revealed on Tuesday that, just this year, the credit is responsible for more than 1,200 jobs and some $92 million pumped into Illinois' economy. Four new TV series, including Fox's The Mob Doctor and NBC's Chicago Fire, are being produced in the state, and a fifth will begin filming soon.
Since its creation, the credit has brought Illinois $971 million and more than 10,000 jobs, according to an Associated Press report.
"We are thrilled that the TV networks recognize what a perfect place Illinois is for series television," Betsy Steinberg, managing director of the Illinois Film Office, told WREX-TV. "Our tax credits for film production, access to world-class infrastructure and great crews combine to make Illinois a winning destination for production companies."
