Bryant, a senior cornerback, is one of the new members to the Troy football team this fall. He has just one year of eligibility remaining. He graduated from USC (Trojans) in four years, redshirting last year. He was the hero of the 2009 USC-Notre Dame game, deflecting a pass at the end to seal a USC win.
He went to Lincoln High School, also the Trojans, in Tallahassee, Fla.
"It really is a coincidence," Bryant said Thursday after his first practice.
Bryant was one of the country's top-rated cornerbacks coming out of high school. He got plenty of experience at USC, one of the nation's elite programs, but is eager to finish his career out in style for the Troy Trojans. He's hoping to follow the same path former Trojan cornerbacks Elbert Mack, Leodis McKelvin and Jorrick Calvin took to the NFL. Sherrod Martin, a safety, is also in the NFL.
"With the cornerbacks they've put in the league through the years, this is where I wanted to be ultimately," Bryant said.
Bryant is close to Troy sophomore linebacker Mark Wilson and former linebacker Xavier Lamb, who finished last year. Wilson and Lamb also went to Lincoln. He'll be able to get all of his family and friends to home games, as Tallahassee isn't a far drive.
"They all had good things to say about the Trojan program," Bryant said. "It’s exciting to know that a lot more of my family can come out here and visit in me, but in the end, the football field is 100 yards long and 50 yards wide, and I’m just here to play football."
Bryant didn't anticipate there being problems with picking up Troy's defense. He has less than a month before Troy's Sept. 1 season opener at UAB.
"I feel like I'm picking up the defense," Bryant said. "The defense is kind of the same thing we ran at Southern Cal, but it’s got a different name and I’ve just got to stick it in my head."
