Awards include one for Jubilee - Summertime Blues performances taped at Henderson's W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival

The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) recently honored 20 public broadcasters, including KET, with national awards. KET earned four awards, more than any other public television station.

KET’s education division won two NETA awards in the category of instructional media. Marianne Mosley, Brett Smith, Esther Tattershall and Lynda Thomas were recognized for their work with the resource Self-Paced Professional Development Modules. Mary Duncan, Allison NeCamp and Brian Spellman were recognized for their work with the teacher resource Education Promotion Packet.

In addition, KET also won a NETA award in the category of community engagement. Bill Goodman, Erin Milburn Lowry, Abby Malik and Renee Shaw were recognized for their work with KET’s social media coverage during the 2011 election season.

In the category of promotion campaign, Amanda Dawahare, John Dawahare, Nick Helton and Steve Shaffer were recognized for their work with Jubilee – Summertime Blues, the 2011 season that features performances recorded at the W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival in Henderson.

“KET is honored to be recognized at this year’s NETA awards,” said Shae Hopkins, KET’s executive director. “Congratulations to our staff for their exceptional work and to the public we serve for their continued support that makes our educational programs and services possible. We can all take pride in this national recognition.”

In all, NETA presented 30 awards in the areas of program production, promotion, outreach and instructional media. The celebratory presentation was part of NETA’s annual conference, held this year in St. Louis.

KET's Shae Hopkins named NETA vice chair

Shae Hopkins
KET executive director and CEO Shae Hopkins recently was named vice chair and chair-elect of the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) for the 2013 fiscal year at the organization’s summer meeting.

“It’s an honor to have been elected by my peers to help lead the board of NETA,” Hopkins said. “Like KET, hundreds of local public television stations throughout the country provide tremendous services to their communities. Our collective commitment to education and digital-learning resources, as well as local arts, culture and public-affairs programming, is unmatched. NETA is a key partner, supporting local stations in these critical areas.”

“We are very pleased that Shae Hopkins was elected vice chair by the NETA membership. This is a solid indication not only of the high regard for KET among its public broadcasting peers, but also the importance of the work that Shae and her management team have done to support and expand public television’s role in education and professional training,” said NETA president Skip Hinton. “We look forward to her tenure on our executive committee.”

NETA is a professional association based in Columbia, SC, that serves public television licensees and educational entities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, by providing quality program content, educational resources, professional development, management support and national representation.

KET is Kentucky's statewide public television network, with stations located across the Commonwealth including five serving Western Kentucky: WKOH (ch. 31, Owensboro/Henderson), WKMA (ch. 35, Madisonville), WKBG (ch. 53, Bowling Green), WKMU (ch. 21, Murray) and WKPD (ch. 29, Paducah).
