Super Bowl Update

On a day that saw CBS put its struggling Monday night comedy, Partners, out of its misery, ABC is also doing some plug-pulling, according to a TVGuide.com report.

ABC has decided, the site reports, to send Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue to its scrap heap.

The new shows debuted to ratings barely above a 2, and more recently both have hovered in the 1.3 range.

The network's decision on 666 Park Avenue was probably made easier by the fact that the show's New York set was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy late last month.

The Hollywood Reporter reports this afternoon that CBS has canceled its one and only new comedy of the fall season, Partners.

Partners, which debuted two months ago in the 7:30 p.m. CT slot that gave soem of CBS' most popular comedies their start, just couldn't get traction in a crowded field of new shows.

On Monday night, a rerun of Two and a Half Men will air in the timeslot.  It's not immediately clear if that will be the case from here on out, or what CBS will do long-term.

This is CBS' second cancellation of the season; Made in Jersey was dumped early on after just two episodes.

Warner Bros. has announced this afternoon that Anderson Live, the syndicated daytime talk show hosted by Anderson Cooper, will end its run at the end of the show's current season.

“We are extremely proud of Anderson and the show that he and the entire production team have produced,” said a Warner Bros. spokesperson in a statement. “While we made significant changes to the format, set and produced it live in its second season, the series will not be coming back for a third season in a marketplace that has become increasingly difficult to break through.”

The biggest problem the show has faced has been ratings.  The show was a weak performer in the 2011-12 season, and despite the changes made for this season, it just hasn't been able to make any headway among strong competition. Indeed, for the week ending, the show averaged a 1.1 rating nationally, down 15% from an already weak number for the same week last year.

ABC has decided to retire Private Practice after a short, 13-episode sixth season.

The move, which was announced Friday, came as the network was ordering more episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Modern Family, The Middle and Castle.

The show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, said she's "sad" that the show won't make it through another full season. "There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that (the show) was reaching its finish line," she wrote on Twitter. 

Rhimes did admonish her followers to watch the remaining episodes, which she called "a creative renaissance."

UPDATE, 2:30 a.m. FRIDAY: I goofed, folks. Animal Practice is actually the third show of the season to be canceled.  Last Friday, while my wife and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary, NBC pulled the plug on a show it hadn't even brought to air!  Perhaps we can take this as a good sign that NBC is finally figuring out which shows are going to bomb before they ruin our TV viewing.  It's about damn time.

PREVIOUSLY: NBC announced this afternoon that it's canceled the low-rated sitcom Animal Practice, although the network has decided to burn off a couple more episodes.

Starting Nov. 14, Whitney - a fairly popular show that NBC had delayed just last week - will return and take over the 7 p.m. CT Wednesday slot.

Interestingly, Animal Practice is only the second show of the season to be canceled so far.  CBS was first to kill one of its progeny when it sent Made in Jersey packing last week.

One of this reporter's favorite shows of the new season has been canceled by CBS due to low ratings.

Made in Jersey, which starred Janet Montgomery as "Jersey girl" attorney Martina Garretti, debuted to a mediocre 1.1 rating when it debuted Sept. 28.  It fared no better in its second go-around last week, which will be its last.

In the show's place, CBS has decided to make some changes to tide us over until Undercover Boss gets pulled up to debut on Nov. 2.

This Friday, a rerun of NCIS will take over the 7 p.m. CT (8 ET) slot.  That will be followed by CSI:NY, which will return to 8 p.m. CT (9 ET).  Blue Bloods will stay at 9 p.m. CT (10 ET).

Next Friday night (Oct. 19), a Hawaii Five-O repeat will air at 7 CT, with NCIS coming back for one more week (Oct. 26) before Undercover Boss comes back for the first Friday night in November.

Got all that?  I hope so.

In the latest of a depressingly long string of failures, NBC has pulled the plug on its freshman medical drama, Saving Hope.

The Canadian show (which will continue for a second season in the Great White North) simply couldn't find enough viewers south of the 49th parallel to keep a spot in the lineup. Last week's episode drew only 2.5 million viewers, a 0.5 rating and a 1 share among viewers 18 to 49.

NBC plans to make the final two episodes of Saving Hope available on its website, NBC.com.
