WKCM translator move, power increase proposed

WAY Media has applied to the FCC for permission to move an FM translator which now broadcasts one of The Cromwell Group's AM radio stations.

If the Commission gives the OK, WAY's W267BM-101.3 FM, which simulcasts country WKCM-1160 AM, would be relocated from its current location in Breckinridge County, Ky. to the WTCJ tower near Cannelton, Ind.  As part of the move, the station's city of license would change from Tell City to Hawesville.  (WKCM is also licensed to the Hancock County seat.)

The move is to be accompanied by a substantial power increase, from the current 99 watts to 250, the maximum allowed for FM translators.

Cromwell Group's purchase of translator for WTCJ OK'd

Deal won't be completed unless proposed move from Mercer, Ky. to Tell City is approved

The Federal Communications Commission has given its approval for Bud Walters' Hancock Communications (The Cromwell Group) to go ahead with its $10,000 purchase of WAY Media's W219DC-91.7 FM, which is currently licensed to Mercer, Ky.

Hancock's purchase of the translator, which was announced in November, will only be finalized if the FCC allows Walters to move it from Mercer to the Tell City area, where he intends to use it as an FM translator of WTCJ-1230 AM.

Under existing FCC regulations, Walters can't move the translator that far, so he's applied for a waiver that would allow him to do so because WTCJ brings in less than $2,000 a month in revenue and needs "revitalization."  The FCC hasn't ruled on the waiver at this point.

I'll continue to keep you posted.

THINGS WE HEAR: Cromwell lets Goodall and Chaney go; Owensboro BBQ restaurant to be featured on Travel Channel

THINGS WE HEAR is a new feature bringing you little snippets of news sent to me or gathered from around the interwebs on a local level.  Some items will preview something more in-depth to come at a later date, while others are just little bits and pieces.

Goodall and Chaney out at Cromwell
We've heard that Melissa "Spiff" Goodall and Mike Chaney (Micah Cox) have been let go at Cromwell Radio's Owensboro operation.*   There's been no official word on why the two were terminated, but there has been something of a movement gathering steam among loyal fans on Facebook to boycott Cromwell's local stations because of their termination.

Owensboro's Old Hickory to be featured on Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods
14 News reports that a popular Owensboro BBQ joint will be featured on the Travel Channel.  Old Hickory, which is located on Washington Avenue just west of Frederica Street, is to be seen on an upcoming episode of Bizarre Foods.  No word yet on when the show will air.

Cromwell Group radio stations have a new website

The Cromwell Group's seven area radio stations have a new online presence.

OwensboroRadio.com has a completely new look, and the newly-redesigned site is much easier to navigate and, quite honestly, it's nicer to look at.

You'll be able to find just about anything you want - including local news, sports and more - things that are of importance to listeners in the areas these stations serve.

The site was created in partnership with InterTech Media, a Connecticut-based firm which boasts of more than 1,200 client radio and television station clients.

In the Tri-State, Cromwell owns and operates the following radio stations:
  • WVJS-1420 AM & 100.5 FM (Classic hits, Owensboro)
  • WBIO-94.7 FM (Classic country, Philpot)
  • WXCM-97.1 FM (Classic rock, Whitesville)
  • WLME-102.7 FM (Sports talk [ESPN], Lewisport)
  • WKCM-1160 AM & 101.3 FM (Country, Hawesville/Tell City)
  • WTCJ-1230 AM (Classic hits, Tell City)
  • WTCJ-105.7 FM (Classic rock, Cannelton)
