WFIE ends 14Xtra's 9 p.m. newscast after 3 years

If you're in the mood to watch local news at 9 p.m. each weeknight, your choices have been narrowed to one: Local 7 WTVW's hour-long edition of Eyewitness News.

14 News' 9 p.m. newscast on 14Xtra (ch. 14.2) reached the end of its three-year run last week, with the final edition having aired last Wednesday night.

It's never been known how many viewers tuned in to 14's "early-late" news, as Nielsen doesn't measure the local ".2" channels.  I've been told on a number of occasions that this makes it difficult to sell ad time on those channels, but it's not clear if that was the immediate cause of 14's decision to terminate the 9, which debuted on Sept. 28, 2009.

Sources tell me that no jobs were affected by the move and that the station is refocusing its efforts on its remaining newscasts.

STATEMENT FROM BRANDON RIDGE, 14 NEWS MARKETING DIRECTOR:
14WFIE produced its last 9 p.m. news on 14Xtra last Wednesday. We’ve chosen this to focus our efforts on the 10 p.m. newscast and our digital products throughout the evening. There are no staffing changes with this move.
We are proud of the work we did on the 9 p.m. newscast but we weren’t able to see viewership levels on a multichannel and it’s important to put resources where we can see benefit for the most viewers. That said, we feel safe that the number of people watching NBC, our 10 p.m. newscast, and on our other screens are much higher than on 14Xtra at 9 p.m.
In addition, we’ve been pleased that NBC had a strong fall launch and November sweep performance, we think this will continue to be the trend. This  allows our viewers to stay on our main channel through the evening as well as stay up to date with breaking news and weather information on our mobile app and website all leading up to the 10PM newscast.
Weather information will be the replacement of the 9PM newscast for the foreseeable future.

America Now showing huge ratings gains for Raycom

Louisville ratings for show up 74% compared to last year

I've never been completely sold on "syndicating from within," as companies like Raycom have done with America Now and others, especially when there are so many good syndicated programs out there (including one that hasn't managed to make its way into the Evansville market despite being perhaps the one that was most-talked-about this year ... hmmm ...).

But in numbers newly released, it's clear that America Now is working - and drawing more eyes to the stations where it's broadcast.

Hosted by Bill Rancic and Leeza Gibbons, the joint venture between Raycom and ITV Studios America, which is now in its third season, has improved its position in 14 metered TV markets - including Louisville - by an average of 20% over last year.  It's bringing in some 137,000 viewers a day (good for a 1.2 rating and 3 share versus a 1.0/3 last year) in just those 14 out of the 45 markets where the show can be seen.

In fact, Louisville's ratings for the show have shown the most improvement of all.  On WAVE 3, where the show is on at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET each weekday, it's grown its audience by a whopping 74% compared to last year.

It's not publicly known how the show is doing in Evansville at WFIE or in Cape at KFVS, but both have positioned the show with popular programs both before, during and after, which certainly put it before a solid viewer base.  At 14, the show bookends Jeopardy and leads into Dr. Oz, while at KFVS, it airs between Let's Make a Deal and Dr. Oz.

BRIEF: Former WFIE ND leaves Arizona for Pennsylvania

Bill Cummings
Bill Cummings, who spent several years as news director at 14WFIE in Evansville, has a new job.

Cummings is leaving KSWT (Yuma, Ariz.) where he took over as ND earlier this year to take up the same position at WICU/WSEE in Erie, Pa., Rick Gevers reports in his weekly newsletter.

A veteran of TV news, Cummings has also worked in Tucson, Ariz.; Huntington, W.V.; and the Tri-Cities market in Tennessee.

INDIANAPOLIS: WRTV morning anchor Grace Trahan calling it quits

Former 14WFIE reporter/anchor stepping in until permanent replacement is named

From Indianapolis today comes word that WRTV Good Morning Indiana anchor Grace Trahan has announced that she is stepping down at the end of this week.

Trahan joined RTV6 in 1994, and has co-anchored GMI for the past 14 years.  She said in a statement that she wants to spend more time with her family.  "After much thought and consideration, I have decided that my family time is suffering and I cannot be the kind of mom I want to be to my three children. While I have enjoyed 23 wonderful years in the news business (18 of those right here at RTV6), I have decided it is time to put my family first," Trahan said.

She also wrote on her Facebook page that she plans to join the corporate world, although she did not divulge specifics.

Meanwhile, back at RTV6, a former 14WFIE reporter and anchor will step in to fill Trahan's shoes in the morning, at least for now.  Tanya Spencer (who Tri-State viewers will remember as Tanya Jourdain during her time in Evansville) will fill as the morning newscast's co-anchor on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is named.

Spencer joined WRTV in 2005.

With NBC's Olympic coverage beginning Friday, 14 News adjusts schedule

NBC will begin its coverage of the Summer Olympics from London tomorrow (Friday, July 27), and with that will come a few changes for viewers of 14 News.

The station's 10 p.m. newscast will air one hour later than usual during the Games, at 11 p.m. each night.  This begins Friday night and will run for the duration, except for Aug. 8 (10:30 p.m.) and Aug. 12, the night of the closing ceremonies (10 p.m.).

Those who can receive 14Xtra (which is available over-the-air on channel 14.2 and on several area cable systems) can still watch the 9 p.m. newscast, which will also be streamed live online at 14news.com.  A "mini" newscast will also be available at the website each night at 10.

In addition to the late news change, beginning Monday, July 30, there will be no Midday program through Aug. 10.

MOVING ON: Two leave 14 News

There are two departures at 14 News to tell you about this week.

Kendra Whittle, who began reporting for WFIE in Oct. 2010 after working at WEEK in Peoria, is leaving at the end of this week.  She's returning to her home state and will work at WGEM-TV, the NBC/Fox/CW affiliate in Quincy.

The move comes after Whittle's husband accepted a teaching job in the Quincy area.

Also, Owensboro bureau reporter Jasmin Embers left the station recently.  I'm told that she left the station to spend more time with family.

A new reporter is expected to join the station's bureau in Owensboro alongside Dave Kirk soon.

We wish both Kendra and Jasmin well!
