First, a picture from the darkness at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Beautiful place. Decent stadium, but loved the atmosphere.
Not really a whole lot for me to add football-related at this point. Let's talk about Troy's exhibition basketball game tonight vs. West Alabama.
It's at 7 p.m. in Sartain Hall. Read preview HERE.
Maestri mentioned tonight's 5 starters last week - I suppose they could change, but here's a little bit about them since they're mostly new guys.
PG - Will "Mo" Weathers (Jr.) - Point guard led Sun Belt in assists and steals last year. Will probably end up as Troy's leading scorer, but if he's NOT Troy's leading scorer, that means some of these recruits ended up pretty good and Troy will be a little better than we thought.
G - Alan Jones (Jr.) - 6-0, 180. 22 years old, native of Wichita, Kan. Scored 22.3 points per game last year at Southeastern Illinois College. Maestri loves his shooting ability.
G - Emil Jones (Jr.) - 6-3, 185, from Hattiesburg, Miss., 21 years old. Played QB at Pearl River for 2 years and was recruited, but chose to focus on hoops. Heck of a player in the Mississippi JUCOs and a fall signee. Scored 18.3 ppg with 7.9 rpg. Sounds like a guy who knows how to get the ball in the basket.
F - Justin Wright (Jr.) - 6-5, 220, 20 years old. Playing through a back injury. Scored 11.6 ppg with 5.5 rpg for Pensacola Junior College. Maestri loves his versatility.
F - Ray Chambers (Jr.) - 6-6, 220, 22 years old. Actually the center in this offense with 4 wing players. Productive JUCO player at Lakeland (Ohio) CC, scoring 19.3 ppg with 11.9 rpg and 5 blocks per game. Lakeland reached the NJCAA championship game, so he knows a bit about winning.
There are a few more new guys to watch out for. Needless to say, Barry McKnight has a lot of research to do if he's on the air tonight, which I am not sure if they will broadcast since it's just an exhibition.
Troy's season opener is Friday at Texas Tech.
I will be at the game and will cover it, and also provide twitter updates.
It's time for some HOOPS!
